Since December, the Galaxy S3 has given way to the rise of the Samsung Galaxy S4, its rumored successor, which has been the talk of the town thus far in 2013. The device, which is shaping up to be one of the biggest launches in the history of Samsung, has seen a number of rumors surface in the past few weeks, everything from features to launch dates to release windows.

The Galaxy S4 launch date is rumored for next month.

And maybe the most sought after piece of information, its launch date, is the one that has leaked out several times in the past few days. Today though, we have a report that suggests that the Galaxy S4 could be launched in Moscow, Russia, to tie into the Sochi Olympic Games set to take place in February of 2014.

SamMobile theorizes that based on Samsung’s partnership with the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, we could see the company make an announcement similar to its Galaxy S3 launch which was made in London, the site of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

It’s possible but we don’t think it likely, even if Samsung will be partnering up with the Olympics once again in 2014. Russia, while a large market, is not a target market for Samsung, whereas a region like the United Kingdom, where the Galaxy S3 launch took place, certainly is.

More plausible is a tie-in with a phone like the Galaxy Note 3 which will likely be coming later this year, perhaps at IFA 2013 in the fall. It’s also possible that Samsung could bump the launch of the Galaxy S5 up to February in order to make it coincide with the timing of the Games.

Instead, look for Samsung to select a venue in Europe or the United States, or perhaps even Korea, to launch its next-generation smartphone. In fact, already, we’ve heard that Samsung’s Unpacked event may be taking place in the United States.

Two Galaxy S4 Launch Dates

So far, we’ve seen two potential Samsung Galaxy S4 launch dates emerge. The first, reported by Asiae, claimed that Samsung was preparing a Galaxy S4 launch for March 22nd in the United States. The news came shortly after Samsung Vice President JK Shin exclaimed that the launch of the Galaxy S4 would come soon.

No launch city was given though New York has been a locale that Samsung has used before, most recently with the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Note 10.1, which debuted at launch events back in 2012.

That hasn’t been the only date rumored for a Galaxy S4 launch however. Another report, also from SamMobile, exclaimed that the event would be taking place on March 15th in an unknown location.

Unfortunately, the date and location or locations will likely be unknown until later this month, at the earliest as Samsung is expected to send invitations to the Galaxy S4 launch event shortly after Mobile World Congress, which runs from February 25th to the 28th in Barcelona Spain.

U.S. Release Rumored for May-June

All signs are pointing to a debut for the Galaxy S4 in March. But how about a release date? Rumors peg the Galaxy S4 release date for April for regions in Europe. Specifically, regions in Eastern Europe. That plays in a bit to a possible launch in Moscow but at this point, again, it seems unlikely.

For customers in the U.S., the Galaxy S4 may not arrive until May or June, several weeks after a launch in March. That would fall in line with Samsung’s usual release pattern which tends to favor European and Asian markets, likely due to U.S. carrier involvement.

The Galaxy S3 was first released in late May internationally, and arrived in the U.S. a month later in June, with availability on the major U.S. carriers by July 2012.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is expected to have a 4.99-inch FHD display with 1080p resolution, quad-core processor, 13MP camera, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, Google’s current operating system.
