Samsung Galaxy S6 Price: 5 Things You Need to Know

Published

on

With a Samsung Galaxy S6 launch date all but confirmed for March 1st in Barcelona, Spain, consumers are starting to weigh the idea of buying Samsung’s Next Big Thing. In the past couple of days, we’ve finally seen some chatter about the Samsung Galaxy S6 price and today, we want to take a look at what we think you need to know about the elusive, but important, Galaxy S6 price point.

At the end of last year, we saw Samsung Galaxy S6 rumors start to swirl. However, it wasn’t until last month that we really started to see Samsung Galaxy S6 rumors really start to emerge in full force. In January, Galaxy S6 rumors started teasing the Galaxy S6 design, Galaxy S6 specs, Galaxy S6 launch date, and the Galaxy S6 release date. Many of those rumors have firmed up and we’ve started to get a solid look at Samsung’s plans before its big announcement day.

It appears that a Samsung Galaxy S6 announcement is close. Samsung recently sent out invites for an Unpacked press event at Mobile World Congress 2015 that’s scheduled to take place on March 1st. Samsung typically only uses its Unpacked events for massive product launches and a redesigned Galaxy S6 certainly fits the bill.

LG G3 vs. Samsung Galaxy S6 - 4

We’ve spoken to a number of consumers who are extremely interested in the Galaxy S6 and its rumored Galaxy S6 Edge counterpart though there is some concern about price. The Galaxy S6 price remains unconfirmed and up until this week, the Galaxy S6 price was a complete mystery. Slowly but surely, we’ve started to see details emerge as we inch closer to the Galaxy S6 release date.

Today, we want to take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S6 price and what you need to know about it ahead of Samsung’s announcement. This covers the rumors and this also covers what we typically see from a Samsung Galaxy S release in the U.S.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Price Rumors Swirl

This week, Samsung Galaxy S6 price rumors have started to swirl, giving us a possible glimpse at what the Galaxy S6 might cost in a couple of different regions around the world.

Samsung Galaxy S6 - Exciting Tech 2015

A new report from AndroidPIT is probably the most interesting. The Spanish publication claims that the device will come in two different forms (a regular model and an “Edge” model) with three different storage variants. That is backed by an avalanche of Galaxy S6 rumors that suggest that we’ll not only see a curved Galaxy S6 but three different sizes including 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models.

The site claims that there will be six different price points for the Galaxy S6 in Europe. Here is how it will supposedly breakdown when the Galaxy S6 arrives on shelves.

Galaxy S6 Price

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 32 GB: 749 euros
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 64 GB: 849 euros
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 128 GB: 949 euros

Galaxy S6 Edge Price

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge 32 GB: 849 euros
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge 64 GB : 949 euros
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge 128 GB : 1049 euros

A report from Brazilian site Tecmundo suggests that the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will cost R $2,899 and R $3,999 respectively. That Galaxy S6 price is in and around the total cost for last year’s Galaxy S5 though the Galaxy S6 would be higher. The Galaxy S5 commanded a R $2,599 price tag when it arrived last year.

So far, these are the Galaxy S6 price rumors to emerge ahead of launch though they will almost certainly not be the last. We typically here a ton of about the potential price point ahead of launch.

Probably Won’t Match U.S. Galaxy S6 Price

Now, if you live in the United States, we wouldn’t invest too much into these rumors. International price points almost never align perfectly with the pricing in the United States and that’s exactly what we expect here with the Galaxy S6.

For instance, the Brazilian price point would put the price above $1000. We sincerely doubt that we’ll see either device command that type of price tag, even off-contract. Not even the Galaxy Note Edge, a curved version of the Galaxy Note 4, is that expensive and it comes with all of the fixings including the company’s S Pen stylus.

The European pricing is a little more sensible, 749 euros translates to $860 but even that seems way too steep for the base model of the regular Samsung Galaxy S6. Could we see the Galaxy S6 jump a bit in price due to a new premium design? Perhaps. But with the iPhone 6 priced starting at $199.99, there’s also a good chance that Samsung keeps the base model at that price point.

Multiple Galaxy S6 Price Points

Prospective Galaxy S6 buyers should know that there will almost certainly be multiple Galaxy S6 price points here in the United States and elsewhere around the world.

Galaxy S6 Edge rumors are credible enough that you should start expecting a base model and a curved model. Even Samsung’s invite seems to hint at a curved version of the Galaxy S6. That type of technology is going to cost extra just like it does on the Galaxy Note Edge. The Galaxy Note Edge costs $399.99 on-contract while the Galaxy Note 4 costs $299.99 on-contract.

We could see a Galaxy S6 with a curved display.

There’s also a ton of talk about multiple storage options. If U.S. carriers do decide to carry more than just the 32GB model, expect about a $50 or so difference in price. That’s precisely what we’ve seen from carriers like AT&T in the past.

It’s also worth noting that U.S. carriers have different price structures. For example, Sprint will often charge $50 more for flagship smartphones and programs like AT&T Next and Verizon Edge come with a different set of upfront costs.

Galaxy S6 Accessories Add to Cost

We’ve heard a ton about supposed Galaxy S6 accessories and they will almost certainly cause the upfront cost of the Galaxy S6 to shoot up for some consumers. While we still don’t have a read on the exact price points for these accessories, we’ve heard that Samsung might offer some big time cases that do more than just protect the phone. If the company does release these special cases, expect them to come at a substantial cost. Official Samsung accessories typically aren’t cheap.

We have seen a number of cheaper Galaxy S6 accessories start emerging on Amazon ahead of the Galaxy S6 launch and those who are looking to spend on a budget might want to take a look at those once the Galaxy S6 arrives. The Galaxy S6 is a flagship Android smartphone which means that there will be a deep accessory ecosystem that accompanies it.

Galaxy S5 Price Drop

We’ve started to see the Galaxy S5 price dip a bit as we approach the Galaxy S6 launch date and we expect the Galaxy S5 price to dip even further once Samsung makes its announcement.

Retailers like Amazon currently sell the Galaxy S5 for less than $100 on-contract and we should see carriers follow suit once the Galaxy S6 arrives. Usually, carriers like AT&T and Verizon drop the price about a $100 to make last year’s model look a little more enticing in the wake of a new arrival. Right now, several U.S. carriers are still charging top dollar for the Galaxy S5 making it a less than an ideal purchase at the moment.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Rumors News - 5-X3

We’ve put together a list of reasons why you should wait to buy the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S6 plays a bit part in that. The Galaxy S5 is still a good phone and it will serve as a viable alternative to the Galaxy S6 when it arrives later this year. Something to keep in mind before committing to the Galaxy S6 and its expensive price point.
