Samsung Galaxy Note 5: 7 Things to Know Right Now

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will soon be joined by two new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. At some point, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will probably be joined by a new Galaxy Note, presumably the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. With Android smartphone releases heating up, we want to take a look at 10 things we think buyers need to know, right now, about the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

In September, Samsung took the stage at IFA in Berlin, Germany like it always does to announce a fourth-generation Galaxy Note. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 stole the spotlight at the event though the company also announced a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, a curved version of its new flagship. Both devices come with an assortment of high-end features and the Galaxy Note 4 is currently one of the best smartphones money can buy.

Soon, the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge will be joined by two new in-house competitors. The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge are both confirmed for April 10th in the United States which means that buyers in the U.S. are starting to do their homework. Both appear to be solid alternatives to the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge.

We expect these four devices to co-exist for most of 2015 though rumors suggest that Samsung is planning a follow up to its popular Samsung Galaxy Note 4 model. While the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the talk of the town, Samsung Galaxy Note 5 rumors have already emerged and they have some smartphone buyers thinking about the future.

With those people in mind, we want to take a close look at what we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and what potential buyers should expect from Samsung down the road after the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge arrive in April.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date Rumors

When it comes to the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, we don’t have a lot to go on. We’ve seen some Galaxy Note 5 rumors emerge but it’s still very early on. Even a guy who is plugged into Galaxy S6 Active and Galaxy Android 5.1 Lollipop update plans says that the Galaxy Note 5 is still a bit of a mystery. There are some early Galaxy Note 5 rumors though and we think you need to be aware of them, especially if you’re planning to buy a new phone this year.

According to a report from Korean publication Daum, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 release date could land in August, much earlier than the Galaxy Note 4 release date. Samsung released the Galaxy Note 4 in October after a launch in September.

It’s important to note that the publication also claimed that Samsung would release the Galaxy S6 in March. The Samsung Galaxy S6 release is confirmed for April 10th in the United States and regions around the world. Release dates can change so while it’s possible that the Galaxy Note 5 will come earlier this year, there’s also a chance that its release will fall into a similar window.

All signs point to the fall though and if we had to circle a date, it would be September 4th. IFA 2015 kicks off on September 4th and Samsung always announces its new Galaxy Note in and around the start of IFA.

So, if you’re at all interested in what the Galaxy Note 5 has to offer, you need to plan for a release that’s several months away. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a solid phone and Samsung is in no hurry to pull it from shelves.

Galaxy Note 5 Edge Possible

A recent report from The Korea Herald suggests that Samsung is at least considering the Galaxy S6 Edge’s dual-edge display technology for the Galaxy Note series. The report cites Roh Tae-moon, executive vice president of Samsung’s product strategy team who says that “there is a possibility that Samsung will introduce the curved display for the Galaxy Note lineup.” His comments mirror current Galaxy Note 5 rumors.

A report from China suggests that Samsung will indeed be using a flexible display on the Galaxy Note 5. In addition, an old report from Korean publication Ledwn, which accurately predicted the Galaxy S6 Edge, claims that Samsung will be putting a flexible display on the Galaxy Note 5. So there’s certainly some fire here.

It’s clear, at least to us, that Samsung’s all-in with its bent displays and unless the Galaxy S6 Edge bombs, there’s a very good chance that we’ll see the company put similar technology on the Galaxy Note 5.

Galaxy Note 5 Display

Samsung’s also thought to be starting production on a 6-inch Ultra HD display at 700+ pixels per inch which could mean a shift from Quad HD resolution to UHD. UHD delivers 2160 x 3840 resolution.

At this point, we wouldn’t put too much stock into this change though it’s clear that at the very least, we’ll probably see an upgraded Quad HD display on the Galaxy Note 5.

Galaxy Note 5 & Qualcomm

A more recent report from the hit-or-miss publication Digitimes suggests that Qualcomm is trying to get its Snapdragon chips back into Samsung flagship smartphones.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge both use Samsung’s Exynos 7 octa-core processor. This is a notable change from past Galaxy Note and Galaxy S releases which relied on both Exynos chips and Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm. It’s a notable change and it’s not clear how it will affect the companies partnership down the line though it appears that Qualcomm is trying to get back into the game.

The report, which cites unnamed industry sources, claims that the chip maker is lobbying to get its chips into the Samsung Galaxy Note 5:

Nevertheless, Qualcomm is striving to win processor orders for Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 slated for release in the second half of 2015, the sources indicated. TSMC could stand a chance of obtaining orders from Qualcomm for chips used in the upcoming large-screen device, the sources said.

Look for these rumors to pick up as the Galaxy Note 5 moves into production. Either way, the Galaxy Note 5 will almost certainly be one of the most powerful smartphones on the planet. So there’s really nothing to worry about.

What the Galaxy S6 Tells Us About Samsung’s Next Note

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge aren’t part of the Galaxy Note series but we think that their features foreshadow some of the features that will be coming on board the Galaxy Note 5. In particular:

  1. Familiar release date plans.
  2. Premium design.
  3. Improved fingerprint sensor.
  4. High-resolution display.
  5. Tons of storage.
  6. New TouchWiz.
  7. Camera upgrades.

For more information about each of these, take a look at how we think the Galaxy S6 release will influence the Galaxy Note 5 release later this year. We think there are tons of clues.

Buy the Galaxy Note 4 or Wait for the Galaxy Note 5?

We’ve also put together an early upgrade guide for those of you who are on the fence about buying the Galaxy Note 4 or waiting for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 to arrive later this year. Take a look at this guide if you are truly struggling with a decision. It will most likely address the concerns that you’re having now, months ahead of the Galaxy Note 5 release.

Galaxy Note 5 Concepts Are Concepts

One final thing to note. We’re starting to see designers throw out Samsung Galaxy Note 5 concepts. We constantly get comments and emails from people who are confused about their origins so we want to put this out there.

Between now and the Galaxy Note 5 release, you’re going to see a number of Galaxy Note 5 concepts emerge. Unless Samsung defies protocol and shows off its design early, none of these concepts will be from the company itself.

As we get closer to the Galaxy Note 5 release and rumors start to pick up, we’ll start to see Galaxy Note 5 concepts bring Galaxy Note 5 rumors to life. Still, you won’t want to invest must into them. Samsung’s well known for throwing people off its scent ahead of launch.

Concepts are fun but you should not base your purchase or your opinion of the next Galaxy Note on third-party concepts from enthusiasts. We’ll probably see the Galaxy Note 5 design on display, in full, when Samsung announces the device later this year.
