iOS 8.2 on iPhone 6 Plus: 5 Things to Know Now

Published

on

In early March Apple announced and released iOS 8.2 for the iPhone 6 Plus and other Apple devices  already on iOS 8. This new update delivered a plethora of fixes and new features including the Apple Watch app that users need if they want to use the Apple Watch that arrives in April.

After using the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update for three weeks it is time to take a complete look at how this latest iOS update handles on the iPhone 6 Plus and what users need to know before they update or how to solve problems that appear after the update.

The iOS 8.2 update delivers more fixes and is a bigger deal than many iOS updates. Apple’s naming scheme tells us that any update that changes the number right after the period is a bigger deal. iOS 8.1 in late December added Apple Pay support and many fixes and now we are back on track for more updates with the current iOS 8.2 update and the upcoming iOS 8.3 beta.

What you need to know now about the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update.

What you need to know now about the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update.

We’re still hearing from readers who are waiting to install iOS 8.2, and wondering how it changes their iPhone experience. After using the update for three weeks on multiple devices we are able to share details about how this update works and what users need to know about various changes to what you can and can’t do with the iOS 8.2 update.

There are a good deal of users who already installed iOS 8.2 on the iPhone 6 Plus, but there are still some users on ISO 8 and ISO 8.1 who want to know exactly how this update performs.

No More iOS 8.2 Downgrade Options

For the first two weeks after the iOS 8.2 release Apple allowed users to use an option to downgrade from iOS 8.2 to iOS 8.1.3, effectively going back to the old version of iOS. This is no longer an option. Apple traditionally closes this loophole within a week or two of the release.

Most users don’t want to downgrade from iOS 8.2 to iOS 8.1.3, because there are not major, show-stopping problems with this update and even though it is new, there are not widespread changes like going from iOS 6 to iOS 7 or iOS 7 to iOS 8. The downgrade process is a manual one as well.

The important thing you need to take away from this is that there is no way to go back. Once you are on iOS 8.2, you are there until Apple offers a new version.

Small iOS 8.2 Problems Exist

There are still some iOS 8.2 problems.

There are still some iOS 8.2 problems.

Overall the iOS 8.2 experience is pretty good and it fixes a lot of problems from iOS 8 and iOS 8.1.3, but it is not flawless. In my initial iOS 8.2 impressions on the iPhone 6 Plus the performance was solid, but in the last two weeks the iPhone 6 Plus Bluetooth started to flake out more often with headphones and some apps launched into black screens. After another week, the app issue is no longer a problem, but Bluetooth connectivity is less reliable and other phones are having trouble seeing the personal hotspot from the iPhone 6 Plus.

In the Apple Support forums there are reports of the iPhone 6 Plus freezing on iOS 8.2, a goofy bug that changes the user interface when using iOS 8.2 and a personal hotspotiOS 8.2 battery life draining fast, Slow scrolling in iPhone app, performance hiccups on the iPhone 6 Plus, Group messaging problems, reception issues and WiFi problems.

If you experience iOS 8.2 problems, you should use our list of fixes for common iOS 8.2 problems to solve many issues without the need to make an Apple Store appointment.

iOS 8.2 Review After 3 Weeks

After using the iOS 8.2 update on the iPhone 6 Plus for three weeks it is easy to identify what is good and what is not so good about this update. Recently I shared a full iOS 8.2 review that walked through my experience with the update on the iPhone 6 Plus. This covers the full range of performance from speed to battery life.

  • WiFi and LTE are great; Bluetooth is good overall, but some hiccups.
  • Personal hotspot is less reliable for other phones, but works ok to laptops
  • iPhone 6 Plus battery life is solid and long-lasting.
  • iPhone 6 Plus Apps are better than a week ago without major issues.
  • No major bugs on iOS 8.2.
  • The iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 performance is solid and as fast as on earlier updates.

iOS 8.3 Release and iOS 8.3 Beta

Apple is working on a iOS 8.3 release and currently offers an iOS 8.3 beta that lets users opt in to test the new iOS update before the public release.

We may see the iOS 8.3 release date arrive after the fourth beta, in the near future. Apple offers a variety of changes for users who upgrade to iOS 8.3, but many users will want to wait for the official release. It is tempting to try the new features early, but there are reasons to skip the iOS 8.3 beta.

iOS 8.2 Jailbreak Release Update

Despite early rumors that we would see the iOS 8.2 jailbreak release date arrive at the end of March, there is still no way to jailbreak iOS 8.2.

The TaiG team is working on the iOS 8.2 jailbreak, but they did not announce any specific release timing. it is possible that with access to the iOS 8.3 beta the team is evaluating an option that will work on both of these releases.

For users who want to use jailbreak tweaks and themes, stay on iOS 8.1.3 for now and double check nay updates before you upgrade your iPhone 6 Plus.
