Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update Starts in US

Published

on

The AT&T Galaxy S5 Lollipop update is still missing in action but that hasn’t stopped the carrier from starting its Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop update, the first such upgrade to hit the United States.

In late January, Samsung started rolling out the Galaxy S4 Lollipop upgrade. The update came as a bit of a surprise given that it beat out the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update. Samsung typically updates its flagships before turning its attention to older smartphones and tablets. Since then, the Galaxy S4 Lollipop release has made significant strides and today, it’s finally starting in the United States.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop release will start in the United States today and it’s landing for the one major carrier that has yet to roll out its Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop update. That carrier? AT&T.

The AT&T Galaxy S4 Lollipop update is confirmed and the carrier says that the update will start hitting users today. As expected, the Galaxy S4 Lollipop update for the United States is a big one, checking in at close to 1GB in size, which means that AT&T users are required to download it over a Wi-Fi connection. The process can take up to an hour to complete, depending on network speed.

AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S4 Lollipop update will supply users of the aging former flagship with several notable changes including Material Design, battery saving features and the removal of Code Scanner, Browser Bar and Softcard applications. It’s the Galaxy S4’s biggest update since the arrival of Android 4.4 KitKat last year.

While the AT&T Galaxy S4 Lollipop update will start today, it won’t hit everyone. AT&T is known for staggering its Galaxy Android releases over several days which means that Galaxy S4 users will need to keep an eye out for the prompt. Galaxy S4 users can also manually check for the update through the device’s settings.

The release of the AT&T Galaxy S4 Lollipop update comes out of the blue and it comes before AT&T’s confirmed Galaxy S5 Lollipop release. AT&T confirmed the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update several weeks ago and its version of the Galaxy S5 is the last major variant left in Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop roll out. It’s still not clear when the update will land, only that it will come after the Galaxy S4 Lollipop release.

AT&T is the first carrier to issue a Galaxy S4 Lollipop update though it certainly won’t be the last. Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have yet to confirm plans to release a Galaxy S4 Lollipop update and T-Mobile’s Android update page still doesn’t include a Galaxy S4 Lollipop upgrade. If and when it appears there, it could be several weeks before the carrier is able to get it out to its users.

Since January, the Galaxy S4 Lollipop progress has been slow and steady. In April alone, the update has landed for Galaxy S4 users in China, France, Luxembourg, Slovenia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. It’s a sign that the company is finally starting to pick up the pace after a slow start. There is still a ton of work to be done though as a majority of Galaxy S4 users remain on Android 4.4 KitKat.

It’s not clear if this will be the last update for the former flagship. Samsung typically keeps devices updated for 24 months before kicking them to the curb. And with the Galaxy S4 set to turn two years old in a few short days, Android 5.0 Lollipop could be the end of the line. Android 5.0 Lollipop represents the device’s third major upgrade, following in the footsteps of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Android 4.4 KitKat.
