Galaxy S6 Edge Plus vs Galaxy Note 4: What We Know So Far

Published

on

If you’re looking to buy or replace the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, you should know that Samsung’s rumored to have two brand new phones up its sleeve for August. One is the Galaxy Note 5, the other is called the Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. It’s a device that should be on your radar and here’s how it stacks up with the Note 4 thus far.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the company’s current Galaxy Note flagship, is still one of the best big screen smartphones out there. Its hardware is holding up, its software is getting better, and its price has been on a steady decline for several weeks.

Many people are looking at the Galaxy Note 4 as their next device. On the flip side, some Galaxy Note 4 owners are looking to replace the device for something newer and perhaps, more to their tastes. The Galaxy Note 5 is certainly a device to have your eyes on if you fall into one of these groups but there’s also another.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, which will probably be (annoyingly) dubbed Galaxy S6 Edge+, has been rumored for several weeks now. It’s not confirmed yet but thanks to a mountain of evidence, it’s clear that Samsung’s got a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge up its sleeve.

While it’s not expected to be a Galaxy Note, its large screen and feature-set should appeal to those looking to buy or replace the Galaxy Note 4. With a launch rumored to be a few days away, here’s what Galaxy Note 4 buyers and owners need to know.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Launch

At this point, with just days to go before Samsung’s launch event, there’s no reason you should be buying or ditching the Galaxy Note 4. Wait.

On August 13th, Samsung will take the stage in New York City and debut new products. It hasn’t said what those products will be but it’s pretty clear thanks to Samsung’s hints and rumors that we’ll see a Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, and a Gear A smartwatch. At the very least. A recent teaser hints at the debut of a new tablet as well.

Samsung saves its Unpacked events for big device launches and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus falls into that category. As Samsung describes it, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will be a premium smartphone. It’ll be at the show. We don’t need Samsung to confirm one way or the other.

The company will be hosting a live stream of the event through its YouTube channel. We highly recommend tuning in at 11AM EST if you’re curious about this device. Samsung will likely show it off in detail and you’ll have a better understanding of how it will compare with the Galaxy Note 4 or your current phone.

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Release Date

The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus release date hasn’t been confirmed but signs are pointing to an early arrival alongside the Galaxy Note 5.

Typically, Samsung’s fall flagships arrive in late September, October or even November. Not August. That’s why its been so interesting to see Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy Note 5 release date rumors point to August 21st as their first release day.

The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus release date is rumored for August 21st and that date could include several key regions in Asia. We haven’t heard any concrete rumors about the device’s release date in the United States but we do know that the device will be coming to the U.S.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus variants for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon models were recently spotted cruising through the FCC. We haven’t seen the T-Mobile or U.S. Cellular models pass through yet but there’s a good chance that will happen soon.

Typically, devices clear the FCC on their launch date or in the weeks after the announcement. The fact that its already cleared these hurdles is a sign that we could see the device emerge fairly quickly for consumers in the United States.

First, let’s take a look at what we know about the designs. If you’ve forgotten how the Galaxy Note 4 looks, here is a photo of it from the front.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 uses a plastic design with a metal rim that runs along the edge of the phone. Other important design features include a swipe-based fingerprint sensor, a microSD card slot, a removable battery, and an S Pen holster that you can see in the photo above.

For weeks, we’ve seen photo leaks and rumors paint the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus out to be a larger version of the Galaxy S6 Edge. The Galaxy S6 Edge is Samsung’s current flagship Galaxy S phone.

Here’s an alleged photo of it from the front.

Indeed, it looks a whole lot like the Galaxy S6 Edge. What this means is that the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will likely use a design that incorporates metal and glass instead of metal and plastic, a touch-based fingerprint sensor, no microSD card slot, and no removable battery.

Also note the date in the press image: August 21st. The day that the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is rumored for arrival.

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus vs. Galaxy Note 4 Specs (Rumored)

So what’s under the hood? While we don’t have a confirmed spec sheet from Samsung, we do have a collection of credible rumors regarding the phones specifications.

Galaxy Note 4

  • 5.7-inch Quad HD display
  • Exynos 7 octa-core processor
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16MP rear camera / 5MP front-facing camera
  • 32GB storage with microSD card slot
  • 3,220 mAh removable battery
  • S Pen stylus
  • Android Lollipop

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

Key differences could include the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus’ lack of an S Pen, the smaller display size, the curved display on the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, and the upgraded processor. The Exynos 7420 is the same processor found in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

Note 4 vs. Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Price

According to a report from SamMobile, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will cost 800 euro for the 32GB version of the phone. Samsung’s been selling the Galaxy S6 Edge for 850 euro and this is probably why the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge both got price cuts.

The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will then almost certainly be more expensive than the Galaxy Note 4. As we’ve crept up on Samsung’s Unpacked launch event, we’ve started to see a number of Galaxy Note 4 deals emerge including a $50 on-contract offer at AT&T.

We don’t expect the Galaxy Note 4’s price to go up, we expect it to go down once these devices arrive, so you’ll want to be on the look out for Note 4 deals if the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus aren’t to your liking.

Galaxy Note 5 Release (U.S.): 10 Important Details

Samsung Note 5 Launch Date Confirmed

Samsung Note 5 Launch Date Confirmed

If you're thinking about buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 in the United States, the first thing you need to know is that the Galaxy Note 5 launch date is all but confirmed for August. As we mentioned, this is much earlier than IFA 2015.

Samsung is reportedly worried about the impact the iPhone could have on the Galaxy Note 5's success so it's launching it a little earlier this year. How early? August 13th early

The company recently sent out invites for an Unpacked launch event for August 13th in New York City. The company hasn't outlined what it will be announcing there but it saves Unpacked events for its biggest launches. And that means that we'll probably see the Galaxy Note 5, and all of its details, arrive there.

With less than two weeks to go, we expect Galaxy Note 5 rumors to continue as Samsung's plans for the phone's release firm up behind the scenes.
