5 Thoughts on the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD

Over the weekend, a report surfaced indicating that Motorola not only has one Droid RAZR HD planned for October, but two. Apparently, the company will be releasing a Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD alongside the Droid RAZR HD. Up until this report though, we hadn’t heard about another Droid HD device and that leaves me a little suspicious.

The Motorola Droid RAZR HD has been the talk of the Android town lately. There are plenty of customers out there who are extremely interested in a Droid RAZR device with a high-resolution display and other bells and whistles and from the looks of things, Motorola is set to deliver.

The Droid RAZR HD has leaked out many times and it’s all but confirmed to be heading to Verizon’s high-speed 4G LTE network. Problem is, we just don’t know when.

The Droid RAZR HD could be joined by the Droid RAZR MAXX HD.

Now it looks like it will launch in October alongside a Droid RAZR MAXX HD, a device that will likely boast many of the same features of the Droid RAZR HD but will have a larger battery like the original Droid RAZR MAXX.

That is, if it’s real.

Here are five thoughts about this rumored Droid RAZR MAXX HD and its October release date.

Really? I’m Skeptical

For some reason, this rumor just doesn’t sit right with me. Yes, Motorola is prone to launching new devices prematurely but the Droid RAZR MAXX is still selling well and has been out for less than a year. That being said, I’m also skeptical because we haven’t seen anything emerge about the Droid RAZR MAXX HD yet.

Rumors thus far have only pointed to a Droid RAZR HD. Maybe Motorola only shifted gears a short time ago, maybe they have been good about keeping it under wraps.

But until there is more credible evidence of the Droid RAZR MAXX HD’s existence, I remain skeptical.

Why Not Just the Droid RAZR MAXX HD?

Additionally, I don’t really see the need for two devices. Why not just release one device under the Droid RAZR HD or Droid RAZR MAXX HD moniker?

Yeah, maybe the Droid RAZR HD will be slimmer but I can’t see it selling very well if its in direct competition with a similar device that has a larger battery.

Keep in mind, the Droid RAZR HD battery is no slouch either. FCC documents confirmed a 2,530 mAh battery on board, much larger than most 4G LTE smartphones.

I Wish This Phone Would Have Come Earlier

If this device is the real deal, I only wish that it would have come earlier this year in place of the original Droid RAZR MAXX. Many Android customers have been swooped up by the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC EVO 4G LTE and many others will be waiting for the Galaxy Note 2 and the Nexus 4 later on this year.

Had this phone launched earlier this year, it probably would have been one of the top phones of the year. I may have even considered it as a replacement for my iPhone 3GS. Now? It will face stiff competition, if it does indeed launch in October as rumored.

iPhone 5

It’s not just the Android devices that this phone has to worry about either. Apple looks like it’s going to be launching and releasing the iPhone 5 in September. Many potential customers that Motorola could have attracted to the Droid RAZR HD or Droid RAZR MAXX HD will buy Apple’s new phone.

A launch in October just seems extremely dangerous to me as it’s sandwich in between both the iPhone 5 and a possible Nexus smartphone launch in the winter.

Motorola Better Have a Trick Up Its Sleeve

Motorola better have a trick up its sleeve if it decides to release these phones in October. Something like Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box would be a fantastic trick and something that could lure in consumers that are on the fence.

Other tricks could be a killer marketing campaign or an extremely affordable price tag. Whatever the case is, if the phones launch in October, they need a killer feature beyond the large HD screen and 4G LTE speeds to get customers excited.
