Aldiko is one of my favorite eReading apps for Android and my go-to for books outside of the Barnes Noble or Kindle ecosystem. This app is for eBook lovers who have an extensive library that’s not tied up by DRM or restricted to a specific app or people who want to build this kind of library. With the recent update to 2.1 the free version is now more tablet-friendly.
The newest update alters the interface a bit to take advantage of wider screens with two-panel layouts in the reader itself and in the shopping areas. These were previously only available in the paid version (which is only $2.99 and worth it).
Now users can import EPUB and PDF books into their library from third-party apps like Dropbox, the web browser, or email/Gmail attachments. This is a big improvement over the previous import procedure, which was ponderous.
Aside from this, why should Aldiko be your go-to eBook app on Android?
The biggest reason is that it supports Adobe’s DRM scheme, which means that you can read EPUB books from multiple stores in just one app. That includes Barnes & Noble, Sony, Kobo, Google eBooks, and the indie bookstores in partnership with Google. It also includes eBooks on loan from public libraries.
Second, you can shop for new books from within Aldiko as well. Access Feedbooks, Books On Board, Smashwords and more, right from the app.
There are two drawbacks: no bookmarks, highlights or notes and only a few customization options within the eBook reading experience. Users can adjust font size and margins but not font face or color themes (there is a night reading mode).
These two things keep me in the Nook app or on my Nook Tablet for the most part, but when I want to read a book from an indie bookstore I always import it to Aldiko.
