All the way back in August, Dell delivered the bad news. The Dell Streak 5 had been discontinued. And when it did so, it did so quietly with a short message on its website. It did the same with the Dell Streak 7. In any event, the fact that Dell remained mum meant that owners of the Dell Streak 5 were left in the dark about an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. No more.
A few days ago, Dell released the Gingerbread ROM for the Streak 5, Android 2.3.3 to be exact, the owners of the phone and tablet hybrid can download and install if they so choose.
Since the Streak is currently rocking Froyo, you’ll probably want to think about installing this.
And yes, this is the official ROM for those wondering.
The update process is fairly simple. The first thing you need to do is make sure that you have the correct stock recovery installed on your Streak 5. It should be version 350. Once you do that, you can simply download the file – which you can find here, install it after renaming it update.pkg and going into Recovery Mode, and you should be good to go.
If none of that makes sense to you, you’ll want to head here for some help and guidance.
Unfortunately, at the moment, the ROM only supports English and Korean languages so if those aren’t your cup of tea, then you’ll probably want to avoid installing this.
It’s not every day that you see an update become available for a discontinued device so kudos to Dell for releasing this update so that owners can enjoy the sweet taste of Gingerbread.
