Archos Readying Android Smart Home Phone

By now, many people are familiar with smartphones, but despite the advancements made on our mobile cellular handsets, few of those innovations have made it back to the landline. Archos is hoping to change some of that as it readies the Archos 35 home smartphone, a cordless home handset that comes with a large touchscreen and the Android operating system. Based on appearances, the Archos 35 home smartphone looks like your standard run of the mill smartphone placed in a charging dock.

According to company, the Archos 35 is part DECT handset and part Android tablet. The phone runs on Android 2.2 Froyo and comes with a 3.5-inch touchscreen display. It can connect to the Internet via WiFi.

Unfortunately, though, the touchscreen is not very high resolution, clocking in at just 272 X 480 pixels. Namer and number caller ID will be displayed when there is an incoming call. The phone also comes with 8 GB of internal storage, a micro SDHC expansion card slot, and has a camera for web video calling.

Though not yet available for purchase, the unit is expected to retail for $160. It had recently garnered FCC approval.

I hope the touchscreen on the phone version of Archos Home Connect is better than the touchscreen on their clock radio– I’ve been working with the radio since Saturday evening (when it showed up on my doorstep)– it SUCKS– even way worse than the Archos touchscreens of the past (and that’s saying something). It requires you to literally pick the thing up, holding firmly in one hand, while “touching” with the finger from the other hand, sorta like holding a ball of hard clay and punching a hole with your finger– it requires THAT much pressure in order to get the screen on it to respond. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE– and I suspect it’s how Archos got away with marking it with such a low price (US $149)– by using such sub-par screen technology.
