AT&T Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 Update: 5 Things to Know

Published

on

The spotlight’s shifted to Google’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow release but that hasn’t stopped Samsung’s Android 5.1.1 Lollipop release. The company’s latest is the AT&T Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 update and here we take a look at what owners need to know about this upgrade.

Google confirmed the Android 5.1.1 update all the way back in April. The update was, and still is, a bug fix update that curbs some of the problems plaguing the company’s Android 5 Lollipop operating system.

Earlier this month, Google rolled out Lollipop’s successor, an update that’s called Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Android 6.0 Marshmallow is now the focus of Android users around the world though we continue to see Android 5.1.1 make its presence felt.

Samsung’s Android 5.1.1 Lollipop roll out continues to hit devices around the world and earlier this week it hit another well-known Galaxy smartphone in the United States. That device? The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5.

Yesterday, AT&T confirmed plans to roll out a Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 update. The update brings the aging former flagship from Android 5.0 Lollipop to the latest and greatest version of Google’s older operating system.

With the roll out underway, we want to take a look at everything you need to know about the AT&T Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 update and its release. Keep these things in mind as we push away from yesterday’s release date.

Mileage is going to vary based on your current version of Android (if you’re on something really old the download file could be pretty big) and your internet connection.

This is a fairly big update. AT&T says it’s between 609MB-999MB so make sure you set aside some time to get it done.

What’s Next

This is probably going to be the last Lollipop build for the AT&T Galaxy S5 but it probably won’t be the last Android update.

T-Mobile has confirmed a Galaxy S5 Marshmallow update which means that there is a very good chance AT&T will follow with its own Galaxy S5 Android 6.0 upgrade.

Of course, with an Android 5.1.1 update rolling out right now, it could be several weeks or months until we see some movement.

Samsung Marshmallow Release & Time: 10 Things to Expect

Slow Samsung Android 6.0 Release

Slow Samsung Android 6.0 Release

The first thing you can count on from Samsung and its Galaxy Android 6.0 Marshmallow release is a roll out that spans across several months, maybe even an entire year.

If you're a veteran Samsung user, you know how long these Android updates can take. If you're new to Samsung and its Android update process, here's how it usually goes down.

Google releases its Android update, in this case, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. It rolls the update out to Nexus devices over two weeks.

A few weeks after that, the first non-Nexus devices get their upgrades. (Some non-Nexus devices are already getting Android 6.0.1.)

A few weeks after that, Samsung rolls out a few updates in a few different regions. Some of Samsung's Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates are already in beta testing and rumors point to an arrival in February so we could see something emerge this month.

Samsung has tons of different devices in tons of different regions around the world. Updates must pass internal testing at Samsung and they must pass internal testing at carriers as well. This takes time. Don't believe us? Look at Samsung's Lollipop roll out.

We're hoping for a more efficient roll out this year but it's still going to take months to get Android 6.0.1 out to everyone.

Be patient.

I thought that it would solve a couple problems. Instead it made them worse. Runaway power consumption is as bad as ever causing the phone to heat up dramatically and drain the battery faster than ever. Wi-Fi connections now seem to “stick” and not disconnect when you go out of range of one network and into another. Sigh…
