We had heard that Xperia ion owners on AT&T were seeing the update but it now looks like the update is now available for all owners of Sony’s Android powered device.
The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will take owners of the Xperia ion from Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich which is a huge upgrade to say the least.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich may not be the latest version of Google’s Android operating system but it certainly packs a punch and it’s going to be a vast improvement over Android 2.3 Gingerbread, an operating system that Xperia ion owners have been stuck with since launch.
Ice Cream Sandwich brings a number of new features including Face Unlock, a new user interface, improved notifications, an overhauled Browser, more camera options, and a whole lot more.
AT&T also says that the update will bring faster Wi-Fi and 4G LTE data speeds to Xperia ion owners as well as improvements to Exchange Active Sync. There is also improvements to how the device handles switching from portrait to landscape modes when watching a YouTube video.
All in all, it’s an update that Xperia ion owners will want to consider downloading, especially because it’s free.
The update is currently available through AT&T’s website when accessed from a PC. The website provides instructions on how to get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich up and running. ICS is a large update so the process could take a bit of time so those making the switch will want to remain patient.
Sony has said that it’s evaluating which phones will be getting the upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the current version of Android, and AT&T’s Xperia ion could very well be one of those devices.
