Before Pokémon GO became a worldwide phenomenon people were playing Ingress. It's actually one of the first location and AR games for iPhone or Android, and it's made by the same company that created Pokémon GO, Niantic. 

In fact, most of the Pokéstops and gyms people swipe in Pokémon came from Ingress. The company ported most of its information from Ingress into the world of Pikachu and monsters. And they did the same with the new Harry Potter game. 

Ingress transforms the real world into the landscape for a global game of mystery, intrigue, and competition. You have to go out to parks, landmarks, and other areas just like in Pokémon GO. You'll end up joining either the Resistance team or become one of the Enlightened trying to save the world. Those are the two teams to choose from. 

In late 2018 Niantic completely revamped Ingress, and now it's known as Ingress Prime. It's the same exciting experience vastly improved for 2018-19 and beyond. Well, improved but worse at the same time.
