Upgrade to a Standing Desk

Finding time to work out or move more is tough, but if you use a Standing desk at work for eight hours a day Monday Through Friday you can burn over 2,000 calories more than sitting at work.

According to Just Stand, if you stand for just three hours more each day for a year you will burn 30,000 more calories. That's eight pounds of fat.

There are plenty of affordable standing desk options and most include a way to go from sitting to standing with a quick conversion so that you can go back and forth between the two options.

I currently use the WorkFit-D (review) as my sit stand desk. I am using a slightly update model from that initial review that holds more and is sturdier. This is an excellent way to work in more activity and energy burning into your day.

Carrie Schmitz, AOEAS, Certified Health Coach, Senior Manager, Human Factors and Ergonomics Research at Ergotron explains that, "Low intensity, 'non-exercise' activities like standing and walking are much more important than we realized. In fact, low level activities play a crucial metabolic role and accounts for more of our daily energy expenditure than exercise - moderate-to high intensity activity like running."

You can find affordable Sit Stand desks that sit on top of or clamp onto your current desk if your employer will not buy you a new desk.

I've reviewed the Autonomous.ai Smart Desk 2Ergotron WorkFit C, WorkFit T and Vertdesk options.

If you want to sit less, you can check out these standing desks from Ergotron, an Ikea standing desk and our Standing Desk Guide.
