It’s not the Android 5.0 Lollipop that users are looking for but a new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update is rolling out in the United States delivering fixes and enhancements that should help improve the device ahead of its highly anticipated move to Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.
Way back in January, Samsung started rolling out its version of the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update. The first KitKat update landed for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which, at the time, was one of the company’s flagship smartphones. In the weeks that followed, the company released Android 4.4.2 updates for the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 2, and Galaxy S3.
In June, Google pushed out Android 4.4.4 KitKat, a massive bug fix update for the KitKat operating system. And while some companies have pushed ahead with Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop update, Samsung continues to release both Android 4.4.2 KitKat and Android 4.4.4 KitKat for select Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
Today, Samsung’s announced an AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update, an update that comes right on the heels of the first Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop leak. AT&T’s new Android 4.4.4 KitKat update, as expected, comes with a number of upgrades that will aim to improve upon the experience found inside the carrier’s Android 4.4.2 KitKat update, an update that rolled out many moons ago.
In addition to the jump from Android 4.4.2 KitKat to Android 4.4.4 KitKat, AT&T Galaxy Note 3 users are going to notice a number of changes on board including:
- Kids Mode
- Side Sync 3.0
- Safety Assistance – Send Help Message
- Camera enhancement – Virtual tour
- Knox 2.0
Like all U.S. carriers, AT&T typically rolls Android updates out in stages though given that this is an incremental upgrade, we expect it to roll out a little bit faster than usual. Those with a AT&T Galaxy Note 3 on hand will want to dive into the device’s settings and manually check for the upgrade. If it’s available, and it might be, there will be a prompt to start the download and installation process. This process can take 15 minutes or more so Galaxy Note 3 users will want to set aside some time to get the upgrade up and running.
This Galaxy Android 4.4.4 KitKat update follows in the footsteps of others. Earlier this month, AT&T announced a Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update that delivers bug fixes and features to its Galaxy S4 owners, including Samsung Knox 2.0. T-Mobile followed in its footsteps with an Android 4.4.4 KitKat update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. The update delivered Android 4.4.4 KitKat, IPv6 improvements, and a new Download Booster. So while these updates aren’t Android 5.0 Lollipop, they’re important nonetheless.
Earlier today, Sprint rolled out a Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update that should help to improve that device ahead of its rumored, but inevitable, update to Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Samsung continues to push out Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates to its Galaxy devices but the focus of Galaxy smartphone and tablet users has shifted to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Android 5.0 Lollipop is a massive change from Android 4.4 KitKat and it’s all but confirmed for several Galaxy devices thanks to a series of rumors and leaks.
While the company itself remains silent about Android 5.0 Lollipop updates, we’ve seen a number of details point to potential Samsung Galaxy Android 5.0 details. The Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop updates are all but confirmed thanks to the arrival of early software builds. The Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is rumored for December while the Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 update is expected to touch down in early 2015. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 is also expected to get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update and it’s update is also rumored to be coming sometime this year.
Specific dates haven’t surfaced and Samsung itself still hasn’t confirmed any of the details which means that those still lingering on Android 4.4.2 KitKat and below will still need to keep an eye on Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
