New Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Release Details



New Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update release date details have emerged thanks to Canadian carrier Rogers who claims that the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update will be rolling out soon.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update started rolling out earlier this year though the update remains limited to just a few regions and devices around the world. Inevitably, Samsung will push the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update to all of its users, including those in the United States. We’ve already seen the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 update leak after all.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update quietly started rolling out earlier this week and like the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update, it remains limited as well. Currently, the update is available for just two models inside South Korea though the update is expected to expand to other carriers and regions soon.


At least one other carrier expected to push these updates live soon as well. Rogers, in an update to its Android update schedule, claims that it will roll out both the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates in the near future. The carrier uses the words “coming soon” though it does not supply its users with a specific date. Typically, it does release a specific date so it makes the listing extremely odd to say the least.

Rogers is only the second carrier that we know of that has confirmed Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates, joining French carrier SFR who confirmed updates more than a month ago. SFR claims that the updates will roll out sometime this month though like Rogers, it has yet to commit to a specific date.


While the updates have now been confirmed for North America, we still haven’t see any U.S. carriers confirm their arrival. Carriers in the United States typically stay mum about major Android updates and their release dates, up until the release dates themselves. So, users will likely be waiting in silence for these two to arrive.

Samsung is rumored to be pushing Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android KitKat updates live sometime in March or April and it appears that the software will also be extended to a number of other Galaxy users including those who own the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini.

    Am never surprised any more. Literally. After the debacles of my original Note, my Note 2, my Galaxy Nexus and my Galaxy Tab 10.1 – I just can’t be surprised any longer. I’ll keep buying the devices because I truly believe Samsung is the best in that department, but everything else about how the business works between them, carriers and updates is just plain mortifying. If they made anything but technology, they’d have gone bankrupt long ago.

    I got my Verizon Note 3 about 3 or 4 weeks ago, while I was in the store buying it, I asked the Verizon customer rep if it had 4.3 or 4.4 on it, she said that it had 4.3 but that 4.4 would be released for it in March. Don’t know if she actually knew or was just guessing, but sounds like she may be in the right ballpark at least.

    Everyone complaining about how long it takes to get updates should try to find something to do with their time. I read complaints constantly about Samsung being slow but these devices are incredible and even if I never got an update I would still be happy.

    My S-View Cover automatic unlock not working after update my Note3 to android 4.4.2 kitkat. Can some one tell me how to solve this problems?

    Kcyew, Samsung have admitted that the update breaks the functionality of third party s-view covers. Ostensibly, the thing would not broken with their own over priced cover. I am not a fan of the sview hence I have not experienced this myself, but if you Google it you’ll find that the problem has be been reported on. At this point you simply ha be to wait till they fix it with another over the air update.

      @noah – Spend hundreds of dollars on it, you can complain about whatever you want. Especially when promises are repeatedly broken. The devices are great and I’m not going to stop buying them, but the constant runaround we get as consumers is a joke. It’s a ploy to get us to buy the next one in order to get the updates promised in previous generations. It’d be like buying a house and the real estate agent promising an in-ground pool and hot tub will be installed shortly after closing. Then 3 years later they say they put the pool and hot tub in a house down the street, but they’re able to get you a great deal on it.

        Except Samsung didn’t tell me anything about updates when I purchased my phone. I knew that in the past I got updates and look forward to them but no one promised me any “in ground pool” when I bought my device. So that’s not the same. And comparing a firmware update to a in ground pool is a little off base. Firmware updates are neat but they are little stuff compared to the functionality the device comes with and apps add to the device.

          Sure they did. Maybe you didn’t get the memo, but they put it out there for you. They always do. They hold conventions and issue press releases; saying the device will have an update in the 4th quarter of 2012, or before New Year’s, or whatever date they think will shut us up. Happens every time. And with my current device, the Note 3, it was even more than usual. They addressed the complaints about not living up to the time lines they provide and made empty promises how this flagship device would be different and updates will be plentiful. Just because the Verizon sales lady didn’t say anything doesn’t mean nothing was said.

            I have a contract I signed and a receipt that says nothing about a Tim line for updates. I just don’t see what all the fuss is about. It’s like picking a small part of a major company and its amazing devices to complain about. Maybe you should wait to buy last year’s device this year as a practice that way you always have it with the firmware updates you desire. I just don’t understand complaining about things you can’t control. And as far as I know Samsung has already done it’s part by releasing the update its in the hands of the carriers now anyway. At least here in the U.S.

            And for that matter devices getting updates and new features and firmware is just the company being awesome they don’t have to give us anything but they do. They support the product far past what most electronics companies do. I have lots of gadgets that have never seen a single update from their companies. So why not try just having a grateful attitude rather than a negative winy one.

            Oh yes, they are just so nice. How extremely kind of them to make hundreds of millions of dollars off of us. You’re right. We’ll just all buy old models so we can have promised updates in a reasonable amount of time from purchase. Except many times those updates never come. And they are just added to the stock version of the next $700 device. So for just the small price of $1400, you too could have one update in 4 years.

            It’s only a matter of time before Google or another company changes it up and gets all the business. Someone will come along and transform the game with app-like updates available in real time. Until then, we’ll be on our knees thanking Samsung for their amazing devices like you suggested.

    I bought the americas version of the Note 3 (Unlocked and at full price) received the kitkat update 2/6/2014 from samsung. At&t and other carriers are the holdup. Wait 8 more months for your updates to be pushed to you since At&t wants to make sure their bloatware works perfectly first)

    I don’t understand why would people blame Samsung for not pushing the updates since they are the carriers who hold down new Android versions. I’ve an European version of Note 3, got Android 4.4.2 long ago

      Because its not as cut and dry as Samsung is innocent and carriers are evil. Carriers cause a ton of delays, but with most devices it’s worked into the contract that they have the control over updates. Samsung gives this control to the carriers for money, so that they may load it with bloatware. So while the cause of the delays is often not on Samsung, they are the ones allowing it to happen – while other manufacturers do not. Combine that with these bogus reports of “popularity” causing delays in the launch of the device itself, and Samsung is far from innocent.
