Watch as we compare the Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 5.5-inch and 4.7-inch models and run down the key details on how these devices compare.

Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 Display

For the first time in history Apple is ready to release an iPhone 6 with a large display like Galaxy Note owners are used to. iPhone 6 rumors show that Apple plans to announce an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display and an iPhone 6 with a 5.5-inch display. The Galaxy Note 3 features a 5.7-inch display, an upgrade from the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 display Samsung offered in 2012.

The Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 display comparison shows increased competition, but a Note 3 display is still bigger.

The Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 display comparison shows increased competition, but a Note 3 display is still bigger.

Here’s how the Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 display comparison shapes up on paper, with Galaxy S5 screen details included for good measure.

  • iPhone 6 – 4.7-inch display – 1,704 x 960 – 416 ppi
  • Galaxy S5 – 5.1-inch –  1,920 x 1080 – 432 ppi
  • iPhone 6 – 5.5-inch display – 1,704 x 960 – 356 ppi
  • Galaxy Note 3 – 5.7-inch –  1,920 x 1080 – 386 ppi

Although the resolution and pixels per inch (ppi) are not the only part of a great display they are important. The Galaxy Note 3 display is larger than both of the iPhone 6 models, uses a higher resolution than both of the models and delivers a higher ppi than the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 display specs are based on rumors, but at this point are good enough for a comparison.

A 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 offer more competition for Samsung.

A 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 offer more competition for Samsung.

The higher resolution alone will not deliver a better viewing experience, and the iPhone 6 display spec rumors fall within Apple’s arbitrary Retina display definition. We’ve yet to see an iPhone 6 display turned on, so it is possible that Apple is able to deliver a better viewing experience. Tim Cook stated in 2013 that Apple was not ready for a large iPhone 6 until display tech was ready to deliver great quality.

One thing that the Galaxy Note 3 offers, which we don’t expect on the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is an S Pen. The S Pen is not an ordinary stylus like you can buy for the iPhone. It communicates with the display to offer a vastly superior note taking experience on a smartphone screen compared to common iPhone and iPad stylus options.

Rumors suggest the iPhone 6 will use a Sapphire display cover that will prevent scratches and deliver a more durable iPhone 6 even when dropped. The Galaxy Note 3 relies on chemically strengthened glass like many current smartphones.

Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 Size

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 size comparison reveals that the iPhone 6 may be even bigger than the Note 3. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 mock-up is slightly thinner than the Galaxy Note 3, but noticeably taller. The photo below shows that the Galaxy Note 3 is still bigger than the 4.7-inch iPhone 6.

The Galaxy Note 3 is bigger than a 4.7-inch iPhone 6, but smaller than a 5.5-inch model.

This may come as a surprise to many, and it may be frustrating as a common complaint about the Note 3 from iPhone owners is the size of the device. Apple’s big bezels at the top and bottom of the iPhone 6 contribute to this bigger size.

Expect an iPhone 6 that is thinner than the Galaxy Note 3.

The iPhone 6 mock-ups are based on leaks, but not manufactured to the same quality as the iPhones Apple will make. Both of these iPhone 6 models seem slightly thinner than the Galaxy Note 3, which is not a surprise.

Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 Design

Samsung outfits the Galaxy Note 3 with a plastic back made to look and feel like a fake leather. Apple on the other hand will use metal for the iPhone 6 design.

The Galaxy Note 3 design includes fake stitching, plastic side trim and a removable back that offers access to a Micro SD card and a removable battery. This lets users get power without an outlet and add more storage for $15 to $20 later, instead of paying $100 for more storage when they buy the phone.

The iPhone 6 design uses metal on the back of the iPhone, with no glass at the top and bottom. This is a change from the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5. We see white lines on both iPhone 6 mock ups, but they may be less obvious on the iPhone 6 that Apple announces next month. There is no access to the battery or added storage. The edges are curved and the corners more rounded than earlier iPhone models.

The iPhone 6 mock ups place the power button on the right side, matching the placement on the Galaxy Note 3. This makes the power button easier to reach while holding the phone with one hand.

Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 Specs

There are some key differences between the Galaxy Note 3 and iPhone 6 specs. Although the iPhone 6 specs could change by the time the device comes out it looks like we will see a new 64-bit processor and Touch ID as well as options for mobile payments.

The newer iPhone 6 still plays catch up to the Galaxy Note 3 in some areas.

The newer iPhone 6 still plays catch up to the Galaxy Note 3 in some areas.

The Galaxy Note 3 is a clear winner on display size and offers a higher resolution camera than some of the rumors suggest, but megapixels alone don’t make up the quality of a smartphone camera. We could see an iPhone 6 with up to a 13MP camera and with optical image stabilization.

Galaxy Note 3 Specs

  • Snapdragon 800/Exynos 5420 octa-core processor
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat
  • 5.7-inch FHD display
  • S Pen Support
  • 32GB of storage + microSD card slot for up to 128GB
  • 2MP front-facing camera
  • 13MP rear-facing camera
  • 3,200 mAh battery
  • NFC
  • 802.11ac WiFi

iPhone 6 Specs (Rumored)

The Galaxy Note 3 does not support fingerprint security like the iPhone 5s does and like we expect on the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 may finally get NFC which allows sharing options and enables mobile payments. The AT&T Galaxy Note 3 does not support mobile payments from Google Wallet, even with NFC built-in.

Samsung’s Note 3 battery is huge at 3,200 mAh, which is long enough to last a full day. The iPhone 6 5.5-inch battery is almost as big in capacity with rumors suggesting a 2,915 mAh battery for it and a 1,810 mAh battery on the 4.7-inch model.

Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date arrived last year and we are almost to the Galaxy Note 4 release at this point. But, it still remains a popular device and if you plan to upgrade to a new iPhone this fall you may be coming from a Galaxy Note 3 that you purchase on an annual upgrade plan.

The iPhone 6 release date is rumored for September 19th.

The iPhone 6 release date is rumored for September 19th.

The iPhone 6 release date is allegedly September 19th, a week and a half after the rumored iPhone 6 event. This is not confirmed, but the timing would match with past iPhone release cycles. We don’t know if Apple plans to deliver one iPhone 6 release date for a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch model or if production issues will force the company to offer two iPhone 6 release dates with a 5.5-inch iPhone arriving in late September or early October.

Galaxy Note 3 vs iPhone 6 Price

Even though it is almost a year old the Galaxy Note 3 price remains high as Samsung charges a premium for the big screen and S Pen. The two-year contract price is still listed as $299 on most carriers though some Note 3 deals push the price down to $229 on AT&T and occasionally lower with other specials.

The Galaxy Note 3 price is $299, with sales dropping to $229 or lower. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 price may also be $299.

The Galaxy Note 3 price is $299, with sales dropping to $229 or lower. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 price may also be $299.

We expect the iPhone 6 price to stay at $199 for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and to see Apple increase the price of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. Odds are good that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 price will be $299 on a two-year contract for the base storage option.

This is the biggest load of bullshit I’ve ever read. I have the note 3 and an looking at the note 4. I must thank you for the thorough laugh though, because I find the comparison of a 2014 phone with a 2013 phone hilarious. The proper Comparison that you could and should have employed would be the comparison of iPhone 6 and the note 4. But hell, why don’t we compare a Ford focus 2014 with a 1904 ford model T. You’ll notice that my comparison of two cars is as uninformed as this article.

This was a very useful article as it shows that a phone that is a year older still boasts better stats. I must say that the IR blaster on the note 3 was a major selling point for me and even though I am a Mac lover I will find it tough to give up the extra features of the Galaxy Note phones and switch back to my beloved iPhone. Can’t wait to see what the Note 4 and iPhone 6 really offer hands on.
