Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean Update Starts Rolling Out in North America

The Samsung Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update is reportedly rolling out on North American soil with the Canadian model, the Galaxy S2 GT-I9100M, now receiving its upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, up from its previous software, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Earlier this year, Samsung started rolling out the Android 4.1 update for the Galaxy S2. However, as Samsung usually does, the software is rolling out slowly, in phases meaning many owners of the aging smartphone will have to wait extended periods of time for the software to arrive. We’ve seen it emerge in both Spain and Korea and today, we’ve seen it touch down for some owners on North American soil.

The Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean update has rolled out to users in Canada today.

According to SamMobile, the GT-I9000M is now receiving the update which is the Galaxy S2 variant on several carriers in Canada. The roll out is available Over-the-Air and through Samsung Kies. It’s also available for manual installation and those wishing to take that route can find the file through SamFirmware. Of course, for novices, we suggest waiting for the OTA or snagging the update through Samsung Kies.

It appears that the update is available for both the Bell and SaskTel variants of the device with roll outs on other carriers likely coming later. Rogers has said that it would deliver its Galaxy S2 Android 4.1 update in late February.

So while it has indeed touched down in North America, we still don’t know when carriers in the United States might get the update. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon all host Galaxy S2 models on their networks, but thus far, we haven’t heard anything out of any of them about the progress of their Galaxy S2 Android 4.1 updates.

Unfortunately for owners, we likely won’t until we get much closer to the actual roll out.

The Galaxy S2 update takes the device from Android 4.0 ICS to the much improved Android 4.1 Jelly Bean which brings a number of new features including Google Now and also delivers Samsung’s Nature UX interface.

It’s an update that Galaxy S2 owners around the world are waiting for and it’s one that they’ll likely want to install.

I am in the USA with at&t as my carrier. So far they have said nothing about a jelly bean update for my galaxy s2, which sucks for me. If I don’t get the update within a few months, I am just going to install a custom jellybean ROM since my phone is rooted and be done with laggy ICS
