20 Things to Know About the Galaxy S6 Release Date

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S6 release date is set to kick off on April 10th. Same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge release date. And with just a few days to go before their arrival, consumers in the United States are still clueless about many of the important details. While we don’t have all of the answers, we do have a few, and today we want to take an updated look at what we know about the Samsung Galaxy S6 release date in the United States.

Three weeks ago, Samsung executives took the stage at an Unpacked event in Barcelona, Spain to show off their latest creations. The two stars of the show were the Samsung Galaxy S6, a true successor to last year’s Galaxy S5, and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, a curved variant that builds on last year’s Samsung Galaxy Note Edge release.

At the event, Samsung outlined the Galaxy S6 specs which include a brand new design language that includes metal and glass, a new 5.1-inch Quad HD display, an improved camera, a curved display on the Galaxy S6 Edge, built-in wireless charging, tons of internal storage, Android 5.0 Lollipop and a toned down version of TouchWiz, and so much more.

Samsung was so excited that it announced an initial Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release date for April 10th. And US carriers were so excited about the Galaxy S6 release that they released sign up pages, contests, and teasers promoting the upcoming release of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Samsung and its US carriers partners were so excited that they forgot to announce many of the important Galaxy S6 release details including the price, storage, colors, and yeah, the Galaxy S6 release date itself.

With just a few weeks to go before April 10th, many prospective Galaxy S6 buyers in the US are scratching their heads. Official information has been hard to come by though we have finally started to see a few bits and pieces emerge. With that in mind, we want to take an updated look at what we know right now about the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 release in the United States.

Go Ahead, Sign Up

If you’re aching for information and you want that information to come straight from a US carrier’s mouth, then you can go ahead and sign up for more information through their individual sign up pages. You can find AT&T’s here, Sprint’s here, T-Mobile’s here, and Verizon’s here. Signing up isn’t necessary, especially if you don’t like getting emails, but it’s an option for those of you that don’t follow along on a daily basis.

Galaxy S6 Release Date Ready

As we’ve mentioned several times in the past, the Samsung Galaxy S6 release date is ready to go in the United States. All five major Galaxy S6 variants have crossed thru the FCC, a necessary step before they can be released, and that means it should only be a matter of time before US carriers make their announcements.

Galaxy S6 Edge Release Date Ready

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge release date is also ready in the United States. All five Galaxy S6 Edge variants have passed the FCC and various other certifications so you’re now just waiting on US carriers to confirm specific dates.

One Carrier Plans to Release in April

While the Samsung Galaxy S6 release date remains a mystery in the United States, we do know that one carrier intends on releasing the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in April.

When U.S. Cellular first announced the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge earlier this month, it told us that it plans to release the devices next month. It did not outline a specific date. The carrier hasn’t told us anything different since then so we’re assuming that the release is still on track. It makes sense that it is given that both devices have gone thru the FCC.

If U.S. Cellular, the nation’s fifth largest carrier, is planning to release next month then you can assume that the other major U.S. carriers are planning to release in April as well. It’s a waiting game at this point.

AT&T’s well aware and it recently released its first Galaxy S6 teaser video which can be seen above. This is a sign that the carrier is getting closer to finally making an announcement.

Galaxy S6 Release Date Rumored for April

While it’s pretty clear that the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release dates in the US are getting closer, the US Galaxy S6 release dates themselves remain a mystery at this point. In fact, we only have a few rumors, the first of which is from hit-or-miss publication PhoneArena.

The publication claims that a source has told it that the US Galaxy S6 release date will take place on April 11th, a day after the start of Galaxy S6 sales in 20 countries around the world. April 11th is a Saturday which makes this rumor a bit odd. Carriers typically release their phones during the working week rather than on the weekend. For instance, last year’s US release took place on April 11th which was a Friday. Apple is also well known for its Friday release dates.

This date is supposedly for the four major US carriers which include AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon. This isn’t the only bit of information we have though. A much bigger leak emerged earlier this week.

March 27th Could Be a Big Day

According to a number of Galaxy S6 buyers on Reddit, stores have begun telling them about a March 27th date that could mark the start of Galaxy S6 pre-orders at Best Buy (AT&T, Sprint, Verizon). It would be odd to see Best Buy start taking pre-orders ahead of US carriers but stranger things have happened in the past.

One user claims that Best Buy will throw in a free accessory, a wireless charging pad, to those that pre-order the Galaxy S6. Retailers are known to offer incentives ahead of release though this deal remains unconfirmed.

March 27th might also represent the start of a hands-on Galaxy S6 experience inside US retail locations. This date isn’t confirmed but a number of different people are chiming in with that date, making it a date to circle on the calendar. Other countries, including Canada, have had the Galaxy S6 available in stores ahead of the April 10th release date so the United States wouldn’t be the first to offer an early peek to consumers.

Users also claim that at least some US carriers will release the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on April 10th after a pre-order period. This would make sense given that the United States is a key market but it doesn’t lineup with that April 11th date. Nor is it confirmed. Regardless, keep an eye out on March 27th. We could see a ton of details emerge.

Smaller Carriers

It’s worth pointing out that the Galaxy S6 will be coming to at least three minor players in the United States. Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless and MetroPCS will all stock the regular Galaxy S6. We don’t have any details on their release dates just yet but smaller carriers have been known to lag a bit behind major US carriers when it comes to release time.

Galaxy S6 Edge Release Limited

Also worth noting that the Galaxy S6 Edge release is probably going to be limited to the five major carriers in the United States. We haven’t seen any smaller carriers commit to the Galaxy S6 Edge and given its presence as a high-end, expensive smartphone, we may not see any smaller carriers take the risk. Keep an eye out but don’t expect anything to change.

Stock Shortages Possible

A credible report from ArsTechnica ahead of the Galaxy S6 launch suggested that Galaxy S6 Edge supply strain would contribute to stock shortages at launch. Obviously, Samsung and its carrier partners haven’t confirmed anything and without pre-orders or a release date, it’s difficult to predict. Something to think about if you’re planning to buy the curved model, stock might go a little quicker, especially at obscure retailers.

T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Release Limited

Something to keep in mind. While retailers like Best Buy and Amazon are expected to stock the AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon models, the T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular models will be far more limited. T-Mobile isn’t partners with these retailers and U.S. Cellular is a regional carrier. If you’re looking to buy on one of these, your options are going to be far more limited.

Verizon Galaxy S6 Pre-Orders

Verizon recently became the first US carrier to announce specific Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 release details. The Verizon Galaxy S6 release date hasn’t been confirmed but the carrier says that it will be taking pre-orders on April 1st.

Galaxy-S6-6

Again, the date is odd given what we’ve heard about Best Buy and March 27th but that’s the official date that Verizon gave us and it’s the one to circle on the calendar.

Galaxy S6 Price

A T-Mobile ARV that we discovered shortly after launch hints at a $699 price tag for the Galaxy S6. It doesn’t necessarily confirm the off-contract price but it does mean that carrier pricing should fall somewhere between $600 and $700. On-contract prices remain missing in action and so does the Galaxy S6 Edge price point. We do have a few clues though.

In Europe and Asia, the Galaxy S6 Edge is going to retail for more than the Galaxy S6. It makes sense given the technology on board. At this point, it’s just a matter of how much more. Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge retails for $100 more than the regular Galaxy Note 4 so we could potentially see the Galaxy S6 Edge cost $100 more.

Galaxy-S6-5

Samsung’s Galaxy S has always been priced at $199.99 on-contract. With the ARV matching previous Galaxy S ARVs, it’s possible that we’ll once again see the Galaxy S start at that competitive price point. If it does, we could see the Galaxy S6 Edge commanding a price between $250 and $300.

Galaxy S6 Storage

We still don’t know what carriers plan to do with storage though we have seen Samsung pre-orders in other parts of the world put all three storage options on sale ahead of the April 10th release. With no microSD card to speak of, we should see carriers offer at least two different storage options at two different price points. One option at one price would be odd.

Galaxy S6 Colors

We also don’t know which colors will be available on release day though we know that pre-orders in Europe have come with more than just white and black. That leaves the door open for a multi-colored Galaxy S6 release in the United States though nothing is confirmed. We should see storage, colors and price confirmed alongside pre-orders and the release dates.

Amazon Galaxy S6 Deal

We’ve already spotted one deal at Amazon that will net you 10% off an accessory and you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for other deals, especially after US carriers and retailers start spouting off official Galaxy S6 release date details.

Galaxy-S6

We may not see many Galaxy S6 Edge deals given its presence as a high-end model but we would be shocked if we didn’t see a retailer like Amazon or Walmart knock a little bit off the up-front cost either on release date or shortly thereafter.

Galaxy S6 Accessories

The Samsung Galaxy S6 comes with a glass back that could be susceptible to damage. It’s Gorilla Glass 4, yes, but Gorilla Glass isn’t going to protect it from a steep drop on concrete or from the elements. So if your clumsy or you take your phone into rugged environments, you’ll want to research cases that can protect your device. Lifeproof is coming out with some and so is Otterbox.

If you need extra battery life, Mophie’s going to have you covered. You might also want to start looking around for a wireless charger. The Galaxy S6 comes with built-in wireless charging. These accessories won’t be cheap and some of them won’t arrive until the devices themselves are released. They’re still worth knowing about right now though.

HTC One M9 Release Date April 10th

Remember, the US HTC One M9 release date is confirmed for April 10th. The HTC One M9 looks like it will be a solid Galaxy S6 competitor and we recommend taking a look at it before jumping into bed with Samsung’s new flagship.

Galaxy S6 Active Release Tempting

According to SamMobile, Samsung is working on a new Galaxy S6 Active that will debut on AT&T in the United States. If the rumors are true, this is a device that is going to intrigue a lot of people.

AT&T’s Galaxy S6 Active (SM-G890A) will reportedly have a 5.1 inch Quad-HD 2560 x 1440 (2K) display, an 8-core Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of on-board storage and a 16-megapixel rear and 5 megapixel front setup. It will also be a little bit taller, a few millimeters wider, and slightly thicker. And there’s a reason for that. It will supposedly come with a much larger 3,500 mAh battery and an IP67 certification which will make it water and dust resistant like the Galaxy S5.

It’s not clear when the Galaxy S6 Active will arrive though we would not expect it to hit the United States on the first Galaxy S6 release date. Instead, it will likely come a few weeks, if not a few months later to give Samsung time to promote its first two arrivals.

Don’t Buy the Galaxy S5 Right Now

Carriers like Verizon haven’t dropped the Galaxy S5 price yet but once the Galaxy S6 goes up for pre-order, we should see it drop down to $99 or so on-contract at most places. So if you’re not feeling the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy Note 4 but you want a new Galaxy phone, wait a few weeks. You’ll probably be able to score a Galaxy S5 deal.

These Galaxy S6 Release Tips Will Help

Finally, we think you should know about our Galaxy S6 release date tips. These will help you prepare for the US Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge release date. While they are missing at the moment, it’s pretty clear that we’ll see a release sometime in the next few weeks. The more prepared you are, the better.
