Google Begins Rolling Out New Android Market for Phones

Published

on

In a blog post today, Google announced an overhaul to the Android Marketplace that will start rolling out today and will gradually hit devices with Android 2.2 Froyo or higher over the next couple of weeks.

Google Market

So, what’s new? For starters, the new Market is going to allow you to purchase books and rent movies directly from your phone. It’s also going to give you Android users out there new ways to discover applications with the addition of categories like Editors’ Choice, Top Developers, Trending Apps, and more. The UI looks extremely sleek and it apparently will be faster than the previous incarnation.

Now, in order to see the new Android Market, you’re going to have to have an Android phone running Android 2.2 or higher and if you want to rent a movie or buy a book, you’re going to have to live in the United States. Google is going to be rolling out the books and movies feature to the rest of the world at some point but they did not give us any idea when they would become available.

So, if you’re on a supported device, you should see the new Market appear within the next couple of weeks.

I absolutely hate the new market! Thanks a lot for blasting us with advertisements we don’t wanna see! I want the old market back. I’ll never buy books or movies on my phone! They ruined it! And theres no appearance options! Great, thanks got nothing! P’ed off bigtime!

In my place of employment I download software all day long on multiple android devices. I absolutely hate the new android market. Never before have I experienced so many download issues. Other than the new Android 2.2 Froyo market looking just cluttered and ugly, it fails to quickly initiate the download once the button is pressed. The only fix i’ve found is removing and replacing the battery. This sometimes has to be done multiple times. I know its not a data issue via my provider. I know this because sometimes when the download does start, I’m seeing a connection error on screen images within the market. My download progress bar shows progress but the markets images are not loading. When you hit the Retry button still the connection error shows. I wish they would roll my market back.  Having the prior market on my Sprint EVO 4g i am hoping they NEVER get the new market. I like it just the way it is. Functional.

The new market looks congested. The UI is not friendly. It is very difficult to browse. I sell these devices & I used to be able to show it to an older person & say “see how easy it is to navigate” hell even I can’t even figure it out now. I want the old version back! These are smart people, I’m sure they could figure out a way to fit the books & movies in the old way.

I have had the new design on my LG vortex since I bought it last year, but no movies. Is there a new version or is my phone just not getting movies? By the way, I don’t know what people are complaining about? Am I the only one who has no problem using the new layout?
