According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Google is hard at work on a wireless home entertainment system that will allow owners to stream music wirelessly throughout the house among other things. In addition, it appears that the entertainment system is going to roll out with Google-branding attached to it. The company is expected to launch the product sometime in 2012.
The full product details remain extremely murky at this point. However, what has been gleaned is pretty interesting. The home entertainment center will evidently allow owners to stream music through Google-made speakers and other assorted devices.
It’s apparently going to be supported by Google’s Android software, not surprising considering the product has apparently be headed up by the Android team for a number of years.
If true, it would likely mean that it would feature some sort of connection/integration with Android phones and tablets. Specifically, those who own the entertainment system would be able to control music by using a tablet or smartphone.
There is also talk of expansion beyond music, possibly into the realm of streaming video.
So right now, it’s unclear if this is a full-blow successor to Google’s current TV platform, Google TV, or if they are going to be connected in some way.
The report offered no clear specifics on when we might see the product.
We’ve heard that Apple might release a new branded Apple TV at some point in the future so it makes sense that Google would want to keep pace with its fierce rival.
Might we find out more about this product at this year’s Google I/O?
Remember, we heard about something similar at Google I/O in Project Tungsten, but the company has been relatively silent about the project since then.
