How to Turn the Droid RAZR Into the Droid RAZR MAXX

Published

Back in 2011, Motorola and Verizon launched the Droid RAZR. Soon after, those who bought the Droid RAZR became horrified when they learned that Motorola and Verizon were planning to launch the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX, a phone that is only slightly thicker than the original RAZR but houses a massive 3,300 mAH battery that offers up to 21 hours of continuous talk time.

The frustration is and still is warranted and it’s one of the reasons that I will always think twice about buying Android.

Well, a bit of a consolation prize for Droid RAZR owners has arrived today in the form of a mod kit that will allow them to essentially build a Droid RAZR MAXX out of the Droid RAZR.

The aftermarket kit comes from Cellphone Repair Shop and is available for a rather expensive $110. It comes with the large battery, a bigger back plate that will take the Droid RAZR from 7.1mm thin to 8.9mm thin, fitted tape, and a cover for the microSD card and SIM slot.

It’s going to take some handiwork to piece everything together but for those that need the extra battery life, this is a solution work looking into.

Keep in mind, before performing this surgery, it’s going to void the warranty on the phone so those that aren’t well-versed in taking apart phones and putting them back together have reason to pause.

Right now, the kit is currently sold out but the retailer is currently accepting pre-orders which it expects to ship out by April 30th or sooner.

Of course, if any of you end up doing this, please share your experience with us. We’d love to hear about your Droid RAZR’s transformation.

I was a little angry after hearing the news of the bigger battery MAXX. Being smart with your phone settings and usage, using apps like Smart Actions, Tasker, or Juice Defender can help you out tremendously with battery life. Maybe not to the extent of a 3,300 mAH battery, but definitely enough for an entire day.
