How to Upgrade from OS X El Capitan Beta to Public Release
This short guide will show you how to upgrade from the OS X El Capitan beta to the final release of OS X El Capitan. Although Apple delivered a GM that was nearly complete in early September, the public release of OS X 10.11 is slightly different from the last beta.
You can use this if you are on the Public Beta, Developer Beta or if you just downloaded the OS X 10.11 installer from a third-party.
You don’t need to do a clean install of OS X El Capitan, but if you want to do that, you can use these instructions.
We recommend you still take steps to prepare your computer for OS X 10.11, including making a backup of your files on Time Machine or another service just to be safe.
How to Upgrade from the OS X El Capitan Beta
You will need a charged up computer, access to the Internet and your Apple Store ID and password.
- Click on the App Store icon on your Mac.
- Now click on Purchases.
- Click on the Download button for OS X El Capitan.
- When you see a warning that this Mac is already running this update, click to download the update anyway.
- Wait for the download to complete, which may take an hour or longer.
- When you are ready, click on the OS X El Capitan installer in Launchpad. It may already be running in your dock as well. Here are the rest of the instructions if you need help.
- Follow the steps on the screen to install the update.
Plan on spending about 30 to 60 minutes on this process, during which your computer will restart multiple times.
After this is done you will be on the public version of OS X El Capitan. If you don’t take this route you may be able to try the next OS X update early as Apple is beta testing OS X 10.11.1 right now.
