One of the most common Snapchat problems is that is uses too much data, followed closely by complaints that it uses too much battery life. A new Snapchat update adds Travel Mode, which will help you use Snapchat without using as much data downloading stories and media that you won’t watch.

To get the new Snapchat Travel Mode you need to update your iPhone or iPad app and then you will need to turn this mode on. This new Snapchat update only adds an option to limit data usage while on mobile or cellular data, but most users don’t need to worry about data caps on WiFi usage while in Snapchat.

Earlier this year a Snapchat update delivered higher than average data use for some users and an update in July delivered battery life and data usage complaints again. With the latest Snapchat Travel Mode and an older Power Save mode, users can control the data they use in Snapchat and help the battery life last longer.

Go to your App Store on iPhone or iPad and the Google Play Store on Android devices to find the latest Snapchat Update. This will enable the new Snapchat Travel Mode feature that will help you take control of the data usage.

If you need to see how much data your Snapchat use takes up you can find it in Settings -> Cellular -> Scroll down to see Snapchat data usage on iPhone. On Android you can use this guide to see what apps are using the most data, and this guide to see how to do it on Samsung smartphones.

How to Use Less Snapchat Data

With the new Snapchat update you can use less Snapchat data while you are on your cellular connection. This is an essential way to limit your data usage and avoid a higher bill at the end of the month due to a Snapchat addiction. You can still use Snapchat while saving data and using Travel Mode, and it won’t impact snaps sent directly to you.

Here is how you can turn on Snapchat travel mode to use less Snapchat data while mobile. You don’t need to use this while traveling. If you normally spend a lot of time on Snapchat while away from WiFi, you can use what would be better names Snapchat Data Saver to control your use.

Go to Snapchat settings.

Go to Snapchat settings.

  1. Open Snapchat and tap on your Snapchat profile icon in the middle top of the screen, or swipe down.
  2. Tap on the Settings cog in the upper right corner.

    Turn on Snapchat Travel Mode.

    Turn on Snapchat Travel Mode.

  3. Under Additional Services, tap on Manage.
  4. Toggle Travel Mode to On.

This will prevent Stories and other content from pre-loading when you are on a mobile connection. They will still auto load when you are on WiFi. This may slow down the start of watching a story while on mobile data since it is not pre-loading the story in anticipation that you will watch, but it will help you use less Snapchat data each month. If you don’t like this option, you can toggle it back off at any time.

How to Get Better Snapchat Battery Life

If your iPhone or Android smartphone battery life sucks, Snapchat might be the reason. You can go to Settings -> General -> Usage -> Battery Usage to see if Snapchat is a big reason you have bad iPhone battery life. On Android devices like the Galaxy S6, use this guide to see if Snapchat is using your battery life.

To turn on Snapchat Power Save Mode you can go to the Additional Services section as outlines above and then toggle on Power Save Mode.

This will turn off your camera after a short period of inactivity. While this may seem small, it can help save battery life as some phones will boost the screen brightness when the camera is active and the camera itself uses power.
