Earlier this month, Google announced that it would be releasing an Android 4.4 KitKat update to Android users at some point in the future, an update that will replace Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The company still hasn’t announced Android KitKat features or a release date but already, we’re hearing about some devices, HTC devices in particular, that may or may not be getting the upgrade to Google’s new software.
In an effort to take some of the attention away from Apple and iOS 7, Google announced a brand new Android update dubbed Android 4.4 KitKat which will be released in partnership with Nestle, the maker of the KitKat bar. Google has not revealed any Android 4.4 features just yet nor has it said when the software will be made available. However, rumors suggest that we could be close to those answers.
Rumors suggest that the Android 4.4 KitKat update is close with whispers pointing to an October unveiling alongside the Nexus 5 and a new Nexus 10 from Asus. Specifically, October 14th has been mentioned as a possible date, a date that is one day ahead of Apple’s rumored iPad mini 2 and iPad 5 launch event.
While the specific date is still a bit up in the air, October seems likely for Android 4.4 KitKat, now that the Nexus 4 has been discontinued and given that we’ve seen an increasing number of Nexus-related leaks.
Ahead of its arrival, we’re hearing about which devices will be getting Android 4.4. Pantech recently confirmed Android 4.4 KitKat for its Vega Iron smartphone and we’ve also seen evidence of an Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10.
Today, we’re hearing some chatter about Android 4.4 KitKat updates for HTC devices with noted insider LLabTooFeR delivering both good and bad news to owners of HTC smartphones.
@thisismejerome 2012 devices won’t get it…only butterfly/droid dna might 4.4…

According to him, several HTC devices that arrived in 2012, a list that includes the HTC One X, HTC One X+, HTC One S and others, won’t get Android 4.4 KitKat updates. He claims that the only devices that may get Android 4.4 KitKat are the Droid DNA and the HTC Butterfly. And he isn’t even sure about that.
HTC is not known for its lengthy software support so it wouldn’t be surprising to see its aging phones left out of the Android 4.4 KitKat fun. However, owners should treat this as rumor at this point as Android 4.4 KitKat is still unannounced and relatively unknown.
Android 4.4 rumors suggest that it could bring updates for older devices, fragmentation changes including screen resizing, Miracast updates, color changes and new notification widgets. And it’s that first part, that updates for older devices part, that provides a bit of hope for owners of last year’s devices. At this point though, things are looking grim.
