Two new series of photos show the HTC One M8 vs iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 thanks to a collection of mockups made of plastic and an industrial sample made out of a block of metal.
Apple is reportedly working on a larger iPhone 6 for 2014, which will include a bigger 4.7-inch display and a new design that will be closer in size to the new HTC One M8 than the iPhone 5s that is currently on store shelves. Apple is notorious for attempts to keep the iPhone a secret, but just like in 2012 when we shared a look at the iPhone 5 design early, Chinese case makers are pushing ahead with a collection of new iPhone 6 designs that match up with recent rumors.
These mockups, industrial samples and dummy units are based on several unverified leaks, and it is still quite possible that Apple has the actual iPhone 6 design under wraps, but as the summer nears and fall approaches we will see more of the possible iPhone 6 designs.
The most repeated iPhone 6 rumor, and one of the few things that analysts can agree on, is that Apple is finally ready to deliver an iPhone with a bigger display to catch up to Android smartphones that stole users over the past two years. Apple bumped the iPhone 5s display up to 4-inches from a 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4s back in 2012, but overall kept out of the push for a bigger and bigger smartphone display, citing quality issues.
In 2014 the Samsung Galaxy S5 arrived with the best performing mobile display that DisplayMate has ever seen, beating out the iPhone 5. With technical barriers to a great looking iPhone 6 display out of the way and Apple’s internal documentation showing consumer demand for a bigger display it looks like Apple is on the edge of announcing an iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display — and this is what it could look like next to the iPhone 5s and the new HTC One M8.
The first set of alleged iPhone 6 photos show a familiar mockup next to the iPhone 5s and the HTC One M8 thanks to Moscoat, who took an iPhone 6 mockup all over the city before settling down to offer a very nice size comparison of the HTC One M8 vs iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6.
In the iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6 comparison we clearly see an iPhone 6 with curved edges and a thinner overall design. This is complete with the rumored volume button redesign and the back looks like it is made of three panels to allow radio communication. This mockup shows an iPhone 6 that is slightly wider than the iPhone 5s, but not dramatically so. The iPhone 6 dummy unit is much taller, nearly a bottom bezel bigger.
When this mockup of the iPhone 6 is placed next to the HTC One M8 we see that even with a larger screen than the iPhone 5s this new iPhone could still be smaller than the HTC One M8 which features front-facing speakers that make for a much taller phone.
While this collection of 60+ alleged iPhone 6 photos show what the design may look like and how the size could compare to the iPhone 5s and HTC One M8 it is not worth putting any stock into the photos of a dummy unit underwater. While a waterproof iPhone 6 is something that many hope for, placing a dummy unit into water is far from evidence of a water-proof iPhone 6.
Another set of potential iPhone 6 photos show a metal block shaped to look like the iPhone 6 rumors. This design is similar to the iPhone 6 rumors, and Nowhereelse.fr shows what it may look like next to an iPhone 5s. This appears similar in size to the iPhone 6 mockup above, but it is thicker than some of the other iPhone 6 mockups we’ve seen.
In previews photos, we’ve seen an iPhone 6 mockup as thin as 6mm, which is just a little thinner than an iPod touch. In this photo readers can see what an iPhone 6 that is 7mm thick would look like. The iPhone 5s is 7.6mm thick, for comparison. This model is measured with a precision instrument to show iPhone 6 dimensions of 138 x 67 x 7mm, which is larger than the iPhone 5s dimensions of 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm.
These two sources combined share nearly 100 alleged iPhone 6 photos with precise measurements, comparisons to other phones and nearly every angle of the new design that leaks currently point to. For now these alleged iPhone 6 photos consist of dummy units and mockups, rather than an actual iPhone 6 casing. This is the next major leak that Apple watchers are waiting for.
Rumors point to an iPhone 6 release date this fall. Most analysts and leaks point to September, but two sources believe we may see a new iPhone release as soon as August. This is for a 4.7-inch iPhone 6, with a 5.5-inch model coming later in the year, in September or during the holiday shopping season depending on the source. Look for the iPhone 6 to arrive just days after an iOS 8 release this fall.
We could see a Sapphire display cover on the new iPhone that protects the display from scratches. Inside reports indicate buyers will get an Apple A8 processor with 1GB of RAM and a 8MP camera that may include larger pixels and some form of image stabilization for better looking photos. Multiple reports also suggest Apple plans to include Touch ID on the iPhone 6, as well as on the new iPad Air for 2014 and iPad mini Retina 2014 update.
