Intel Prepping Low-Cost Medfield Education StoryBook Tablet

Published

on

In a move that would expand Intel’s low-cost education-targetted Classmate PC project to the tablet space, the chip-maker is getting ready tor elease a low-cost tablet that would run on its Medfield platform and could come pre-loaded with either Android OS or Windows 8 for touch-centric tablet environments. The tablet would be targeted at emerging markets and would be sold in a similar fashion to the Classmate PC model. Intel is using the name StoryBook right now, and that name could change when the device launches.

According to DigiTimes, the tablet will be targeted at China and Brazil first and will launch with a  10-inch display of unspecified resolution. As it is a budget tablet, it’s most likely safe to assume that it won’t be an HD panel or anything that would rival Apple’s premium iPad’s Retina Display resolution.

Update: Intel has reached out to let us know the referenced article is not accurate.

The tablet is being targeted for a second half 2012 release. Through normal retail channels, Intel is hoping to price it at under $299.

It’s unclear how the tablet space will play out for Intel. The Amazon Kindle Fire currently retails for just $200, but features only a 7-inch display and has dual-core processing power and a display resolution of 1024 X 600 pixels. The Kindle Fire’s low price–which is sold at a loss for Amazon–has catapulted the tablet into second place in terms of market share, placing Amazon just behind Apple’s iPad in the space. Amazon has been rumored for some time now to debut a larger edition of the Kindle Fire, and that model may compete directly against Intel’s education-centric Medfield-powered tablet.

In early benchmark tests, Intel’s Medfield CPU performed well against early dual-core rivals and provided for good battery life.
