Apple’s iOS 8.1.2 update remains the most current version of iOS 8 though that’s going to change at some point in the future. While much of the talk is about iOS 8.1.3, there’s another update lurking in the background, an iOS 8.2 update that’s expected to touch down in a few short weeks. Here, we take a look at what you need to know this week about iOS 8.2.
Months ago, Apple released two new iOS 8 updates. One was iOS 8.1.2, a small bug fix update that landed for iPhone and iPad users around the world and one that attempted to fix at least one lingering iOS 8 problem. iOS 8.1.2 is still Apple’s current version of iOS 8 though it will be replaced later this year either by iOS 8.1.3 or by an iOS 8.2 update.
Rumors suggest that we’re probably going to see an iOS 8.1.3 bug fix update arrive for iPhone and iPad users in the future though that’s not confirmed. What is confirmed though is the arrival of iOS 8.2, the other update that Apple released at the tail end of last year. iOS 8.2, like iOS 8.1 before it, appears to be a much larger update for iPhone and iPad and one with great importance.
Apple doesn’t like to talk about its public iOS releases ahead of time so right now, iPhone and iPad users on iOS 8.1.2 and below are in the dark about the iOS 8.2 update that currently sits in Apple’s beta program. With that in mind, we want to recap what we know about the iOS 8.2 update for iPhone and iPad and fill in some the blanks that some iPhone and iPad users might be seeing in the buildup to its release date.
If you’ve missed all of the iOS 8.2 update news, this will bring you up to speed. If you’ve been following along but need a refresher, this will fill you in on everything you need to know about Apple’s upcoming iOS 8 upgrade.
iOS 8.2: Current Status
If you’ve been following along closely since November, you’d know that the iOS 8.2 update is in the beta process. You’d also know that the iOS 8.2 update is now in its fourth beta which means that Apple, and its developer partners, are making significant progress toward the public release of the software. A fifth beta is not in sight though we could certainly see Apple moving to another version in preparation for the final release. Just don’t expect to know when that will be.
We haven’t gone into too much depth about the iOS 8.2 beta itself though some iPhone and iPad users have. We’re starting to see some users post their impressions online giving us an early glimpse at how the iOS 8.2 beta could run on iPhones and iPads.
It’s important to remember that iOS 8.2 beta 4 is probably not the GM and beta software is just that, beta software. It’s a work in progress and it’s probably not going to reflect the final product.
That said, these impressions are worth taking a look at because they will help you prepare for the release. Especially the comparisons that pit it against iOS 8.1.2.
iOS 8.2 Release Date
With the release of the iOS 8.2 beta 4, we know that Apple’s making progress towards a public iOS 8.2 release. That said, we still don’t know exactly when the iOS 8.2 release date will land. We do have a window that we’re looking at though.
The latest Apple Watch rumors put the device’s release date in the month of March, the window that Apple used to use for the iPad. The timing falls into Apple’s official “Spring” launch line and it comes from a credible source that’s been accurate with information in the past.
Apple’s iOS 8.2 update is clearly tied into the release of the Apple Watch, it will deliver the support older devices need, and so a release should come around the same time as that release. In other words, iOS 8.2 is almost certainly several weeks away from its anticipated arrival which means that those dealing with iOS 8 problems are going to need to look elsewhere.
iOS 8.1.3 Release Could Be Close
It does look like Apple is planning to release an iOS 8.1.3 update for iPhone and iPad. While rumors have pointed to an imminent release, we still haven’t seen the iOS 8.1.3 release, a release that should bring bug fixes for iOS 8 problems to iPhone and iPad users.
Gotta Be Mobile has seen a significant pickup in iOS 8.1.3 activity in recent days, a sign that a release could be very close. Right now, reports suggest that a beta version of the software is in the hands Apple employees though a specific release date remains out of the picture. Where there is smoke there is typically fire and we’r expecting Apple to push this update out at some point between today and the arrival of iOS 8.2.
Those in need of bug fixes would be wise to check their device at 10AM PST between Monday and Friday. Apple doesn’t release software on the weekend. We also suggest taking a look at our latest iOS 8.1.3 roundup for all of the latest details.
What to Do in the Meantime
If you’ve been looking at the iOS 8.1.3 and iOS 8.2 updates as potential remedies for your iOS 8 struggles, you’re going to have to wait. There are, however, some things you can do in the meantime to potentially alleviate your iOS 8 problems.
We’ve put together a list of fixes for some of the more common iOS 8.1.2 problems. These fixes apply to iOS 8.1.2 but they will also work for problems on iOS 8.1.1 and below. They are not guaranteed fixes so we suggest looking around for feedback from other users as well.
It’s very clear that these two updates have quite a bit of potential but just remember, iOS 8.1.3 and iOS 8.2 could certainly bring some problems of their own. iOS 8.2 in particular because with the Apple Watch, the company’s wading into uncharted territory.
