iOS 9 Release Time: 5 Things to Know Right Now
The iOS 9 release date is confirmed for the fall but Apple still hasn’t confirmed a specific date for iOS users. The company hasn’t confirmed an iOS 9 release time either. With that in mind, we want to take an early look at what you need to know about Apple and its release protocol ahead of launch.
In June, Apple confirmed the release of a brand new iOS update dubbed iOS 9. iOS 9 will succeed iOS 8 on Apple’s stable of iPhones and iPads (including the iPhone 4s and iPad 2) and it will also be coming to the fifth-generation iPod touch.
On stage, Apple detailed a ton of iOS 9 information including an iOS 9 beta, several key iOS 9 features, and the iOS 9 release date. The iOS 9 release date is confirmed for the fall though Apple still hasn’t confirmed any specifics. All we have is a window.Last week, Apple confirmed a media event for September 9th. There, the company is expected to announce its new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. There’s also a good chance that Apple uses the event as a launch pad for the iOS 9 update.
We’re expecting the company to go over important iOS 9 features and we’re also expecting an iOS 9 release date to get confirmed at the event.
Apple hasn’t announced anything just yet but we have a pretty good idea about what to expect from the iOS 9 release date and iOS 9 release time. Keep these in mind as we push towards the September 9th launch date and the inevitable release of iOS 9.
No Official iOS 9 Release Time Details
While we expect Apple to outline the iOS 9 update and its release date on stage during the September 9th event in San Francisco, there’s a good chance that we won’t see the company reveal a specific iOS 9 release time on stage.
Apple almost never reveals an update’s release time ahead of time. An Apple employee revealed the iOS 8.4 update’s release time for 8AM ahead of its release but the comment was immediately retracted. (The employee has also since left the company.)
We expect the iOS 9 release time to remain a mystery (sort of) in the days leading up to the iOS 9 release date for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users.
U.S. iOS 9 Release Time
Even if Apple doesn’t confirm a specific time ahead of the release date, we still know what to expect from it and iOS 9.
Over the years, Apple’s developed an iOS release pattern that’s easy to follow. If you’ve been through an iOS release before, you probably have some idea about what to expect. If you haven’t, or you just need a reminder ahead of launch day, here’s what you should expect from the iOS 9 release time if you live in the United States.
If you live on the west coast of the United States, in the PST zone, you can expect the iOS 9 release time to land sometime between 9AM PST and 10AM PST. Here’s what that looks like if you live in other parts of the United States:
- Eastern – 1 PM
- Central – 12 PM
- Mountain – 11 AM
The iOS 9 update will arrive at the same time for everyone. Apple doesn’t take a staggered approach. The iPhone 6 will get it at the same time as the iPhone 4s. Only the time of day will be different.
If you live in the U.S. and want to download and install the iOS 9 update right when it comes out, you’ll want to block off some time in the morning or early afternoon.
Global iOS 9 Release Times
Apple’s iOS releases come in the morning and early afternoon in the United States but they’ll come much later (or earlier) in other parts of the world.
If you live outside of the United States, here’s what you can expect from the iOS 9 release time. We’ve covered a few of the major countries. If you don’t see yours listed here, you’ll need to convert 9AM-10AM PST.
- London – 6 PM
- Moscow – 9 PM
- New Dehli – 10:30 PM
- Shanghai – 1 AM
- Tokyo – 2 AM
- Melbourne – 3 AM
- Auckland – 5 AM
Again, there’s a good chance that Apple will forget to confirm those times on stage during the iPhone 6s launch so you’ll need to mark these times down in your calendar and hope that the company doesn’t stray from its pattern.
iOS 9 Release Date
So what about the iOS 9 release date? Apple still hasn’t confirmed a specific date for its new operating system. But thanks to a series of credible rumors, and Apple’s history, we have some solid leads on the specific date.
The iPhone 6s launch date is all but confirmed for September 9th. And it’s there that we expect Apple to outline the specific iOS 9 release date for older devices like the iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, and others.
Apple typically releases its iOS updates two days before the arrival of a new iPhone and this year, the iPhone 6s release date is rumored for September 18th. This means that September 16th is the prime candidate for the iOS 9 release date. That date isn’t confirmed but it’s likely.
With an iPhone 6s launch date all but confirmed, iPhone 6s release date rumors pointing in one direction, and the fact that we haven’t seen a new iOS 9 beta (a sign that a public release is getting closer) in weeks, we’re confident that the iOS 9 release date will take place in September.
iOS 9 Release Time Problems
When the update arrives, it will become available Over-the-Air through Settings and through iTunes. Choose whichever you feel most comfortable with and note that Apple’s slimmed down the size of the iOS 9 update to make it easier to install on 8GB and 16GB devices. That doesn’t mean that iOS 9 problems won’t emerge in and around the iOS 9 release time though.
We typically see a ton of problems emerge in and around the iOS release time. Apple’s servers get slammed with requests and iPhone and iPad users generally encounter long download and install times because of it. These problems are the worst during high profile releases. The iOS 9 release is as high profile as it gets.
Download problems are only part of the story. We almost always see bugs and other issues plague users right at launch. Apple’s put the iOS 9 update through an extensive beta process but problems will slip through the cracks. Common problems include battery drain, connectivity issues and changes to UI speed.
If you want to avoid long wait times and early iOS 9 problems, you might want to avoid downloading the iOS 9 update right at its release time. Wait for the smoke to settle. Installation issues usually clear up within a few hours and we typically get a read on other major iOS problems in the first day or two.
