Production of iPhone 5 displays is already underway at LG Displays according to the display manufacturer.
In a comment to Reuters, LG Displays CEO, Han Sang-beom, says, “We just began mass production and we don’t expect any disruption in supplies.”
LG Display joins Sharp in announcing that iPhone 5 display production is in progress. Sharp claims new iPhone displays will ship to Apple this month, fueling speculation for a September 12th announcement and a September 21st iPhone 5 release date.
Japan Display, a company composed of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba may also make displays for the new iPhone, but there is no confirmation that production is underway at Japan Display.
It’s not out of the ordinary for a company like Apple to source displays from multiple sources. This helps Apple meet the demand for the iPhone 5, especially with reported difficulties in building the new in-cell touch display panels. Sharp is also rumored to be manufacturing the 7.85-inch IGZO display for Apple’s iPad Mini.
The iPhone 5 may mark a major change in the iPhone, growing from the 3.5-inch display Apple clung to since the iPhone launch to a 4-inch display.
With competitors launching smartphones with displays measuring 4.3-inches, 4.85 inches and possibly 5.5-inches with the Galaxy Note 2, Apple may be feeling pressure and sensing consumer demand for larger displays.
The new iPhone 5 display will most likely use in-cell touch panel technology which places the touch sensors in the display, instead of underneath, allowing for a thinner display panel. This technology also increases outdoor visibility by reducing glare.
We anticipate the iPhone 5 launch event on September 12th, with preorders starting later that day. Apple will likely release iOS 6 and the iPhone 5 the following week.
The iPhone 5 is expected to feature faster 4G LTE cellular connectivity on Sprint, Verizon and AT&T as well as a faster processor capable of delivering better visuals in iPhone games.
