I bought the white 32 GB Apple iPhone 5 and unboxed it on camera.
In the video below I show off the iPhone 5 packaging, the new Lightning sync cable compared to the 30-pin dock connector and the new Apple EarPods.
My first impressions are positive. Apple, as always, makes opening a new tech toy a real pleasure. Gadget lovers will enjoy the suction that holds the cover on the phone as they lift it off the box.
iPhone 5 Unboxing Video
Once inside the box there’s not a lot new compared to past iPhones. The phone sits on top. Lift off the cardboard cradle in which it sits and pull out the documentation and Apple stickers.
Underneath the user will find the wall wart and the new Lightning cable that takes up far less space. This is a necessity thanks to the reduction in thickness the iPhone 5 brings, as the folks at iFixit revealed in their teardown. The cable slides into the phone easily and inserts in either direction.
The EarPods come with a nice plastic carrying case. That’s nice since so many earbuds get tangled in my pocket. It’s a little difficult to get the EarPods back into the plastic case, however.
The iPhone itself feels smaller and lighter, but not as dramatically lighter as first reviews described including our Troy Frommer who camped out to get his iPhone 5 the night before the launch and got one of the first hands on experiences the night before launch. Also, the taller screen doesn’t make a huge difference in my first impression. We’ll see once I install some apps and use it for a while. Next week I’ll post a comparison to my Samsung Galaxy S III which definitely skews my impressions of the screen size.
The iPhone 5 looks beautiful. I love the design and the look around the edges. Some say it exudes a jewelry like design distinction and I agree with them.
