iPhone 5S Summer Release in the Works, Says WSJ

The iPhone 5S release is once again pegged for summer 2013, as Apple reportedly plans to launch the next iPhone.

The next iPhone is almost certainly the iPhone 5S, an iPhone that rumors say will look like the iPhone 5 and deliver a minor set of updated features.

After a flurry of iPhone 5S release rumors that go as late as October 2013, The Wall Street Journal weighs in claiming that Apple is planning to start iPhone 5S production this quarter with plans to a “possible summer launch.” Rumors claim iPhone 5S production started in early March, making this the second rumor of iPhone 5S production ramping up in the last 30 days.

The information comes from people familiar with the iPhone 5S production. The Wall Street Journal stops short of calling the next device the iPhone 5S, but the description as a “new iPhone similar in size and shape,” and as the, “next version of its flagship device” point directly at the iPhone 5S as rumored.

The iPhone 5S release is rumored for the summer with a design and shape similar to the iPhone 5.

Apple normally holds a developer event in June, called WWDC, which is likely to take place on June 10th this year, according to developer murmuring. In the past Apple used this event to launch earlier versions of the iPhone. There is also a rumor from a well placed manufacturer which claims the iPhone 5S release date is set for June, and another rumor pointing to a June 20th release date.

With these rumors, and The Wall Street Journal weighing in, there may be something to a June launch and release.

If the iPhone 5S arrives this summer, we could see iOS 7 beta builds arrive ahead of WWDC, or a summer release that is later than June. Apple typically offers a 60-day or higher beta period for iOS versions to allow developers to prepare their apps.

The latest rumor includes mention of a cheaper iPhone with a 4-inch display that uses a new type of case which would possibly allow Apple to offer an iPhone with color options other than black and white for the first time. There are rumors that Apple could use color as a selling point for the iPhone 5S, but this report focuses only on a budget iPhone, which could arrive in the second half of 2013.

Steve Jobs reportedly left his touch on the next two versions of the iPhone, which includes the iPhone 5S. It’s not clear exactly what this means for the next iPhone, though analysts expect minimal design changes. We’ve already seen an alleged iPhone 5S back that supports an iPhone 5S that looks similar to the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5S rumors point to a device with a similar 4-inch Retina Display, a slightly improved camera and a faster processor. There is also talk of an integrated fingerprint reader in the iPhone 5S home button, but one analyst believes this will wait for the iPhone 6.
