iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 Review

Published

on

The iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update arrived last week along with versions for other iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch. This is an essential iOS update for anyone interested in buying an Apple Watch because this update adds support with an Apple Watch app. That’s not all that is new in iOS 8.2, Apple includes many important fixes for iPhone users that cure nagging problems.

Apple shipped the iPhone 6 Plus with iSO 8, so the decision to upgrade isn’t as drastic as on some older models, but after problems with earlier iOS 8 updates and the opportunity to try the iOS 8.3 beta, many users still want to know if the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update is worth installing.

After spending nearly two weeks with the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update, here is a closer look at how Apple’s latest software performs on the biggest iPhone you can buy.

As soon as Apple offered the iOS 8.2 download I installed it on the iPhone 6 Plus and an array of other Apple devices to check the performance, look for bugs and see if this update works as advertised. I carry a variety of phones, but for the last two weeks relied on the iPhone 6 Plus more than the iPhone 6 as my main iPhone.

While I try to test all important areas it is important to remember that the overall experience will vary from one device to the next. Apps, services and usage can change the performance and experience of an update like iOS 8.2. For example while the iPhone 6 iOS 8.2 experience is generally positive for other team members, on my iPhone 6 there are more problems with landscape issues and apps crashing. These are not a problem on my iPhone 6 Plus.

Apps

Apps run great on the iPhone 6 Plus with iOS 8.2.

Despite app problems on the iPhone 6, using my favorite iPhone 6 Plus apps is not a challenge on iOS 8.2. After installing the iOS 8.2 update last week I checked to make sure all of my apps are up to date. Out of date apps can cause issues after an update, even medium-sized ones like iOS 8.2.

Apps that I tested include Facebook, Tweetbot, Messenger, Netflix, Slack, LastPass, Alien Blue, Gmail, Safari, Hangouts, Dark Sky, Nest, Instagram and many others.

If updating fails to fix any problems, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Most apps back your data up to the cloud or connect it to a Facebook or other login. You can download apps from the app store again without paying for them a second time.

iOS 8.2 Battery Life

The iPhone 6 Plus battery life is one of my favorite features. Even with heavy use I can get through a full day of work and fun without a battery case. After installing the update, my iOS 8.2 battery life is consistent with what I’ve experienced for months. The iPhone 6 Plus battery still lasts all day with no noticeable change.

WiFi, Cellular Data & Bluetooth

Connectivity remains solid on the iOS 8.2 update.

Connectivity remains solid on the iOS 8.2 update.

After losing connectivity with one of the first iOS 8 updates I am cautious when installing an update like this, but there are no major problems with WiFi, Bluetooth and LTE connectivity on my AT&T iPhone 6 Plus.

The iOS 8.2 update includes fixes for Bluetooth connectivity in the car and Siri Eyes Free, which is great news for anyone who uses the iPhone 6 Plus connected to a car entertainment system.

Speeds and call quality vary by location as always, but there is no difference in speed or call quality from before iOS 8.2 to today. WiFi connectivity is solid, even through multiple rooms and floors n my house and the personal hotspot feature works like a charm.

Bugs & Issues

There are some iOS 8.2 bugs and issues that appeared after the upgrade for other users. These include late iMessage deliveries, iMessage and FaceTime turning off and Do Not Disturb not working correctly on group messages. I am not personally experiencing any of these iOS 8.2 bugs on my iPhone 6 Plus, but they are out there.

One reason for this iOS 8.2 review after almost two weeks is that bugs can appear after extended use, but so far the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 review is positive with no major problems on my device.

If you do run into issues, it is wise to use our iOS 8.2 problems and fixes to identify what’s wrong and fix the problem on your own.

Speed

The iPhone 6 Plus is a fast iPhone that quickly switches apps, loads games and delivers entertainment and productivity without lag or the need for great amounts of patience.

After installing iOS 8.2 on the iPhone 6 Plus the speed and performance are at the same level they’ve been since launch in late 2014. You don’t need to worry about iOS 8.2 slowing down your iPhone 6 Plus.

Is iOS 8.2 Worth Installing

The iOS 8.2 update is about more than the Apple Watch.

The iOS 8.2 update is about more than the Apple Watch.

For almost every iPhone 6 Plus owner the iOS 8.2 update is worth installing. This delivers the Apple Watch app, but it also fixes a lot of iOS 8 and iOS 8.1.3 problems and delivers a more stable experience on the iPhone 6 Plus. If you use Safari, Mail and other apps on the iPhone 6 Plus and have problems, odds are good that the stability fixes will help deliver a better overall experience.

If you use iOS 8 jailbreak tweaks and iOS 8 themes, you should not install the iOS 8.2 update. There is no iOS 8.2 jailbreak yet, but there is hope that one will come this month.

You can also jump straight to the iOS 8.3 beta to get these fixes and other new features, but there are good reasons that not everyone should install the iOS 8.3 beta.
