More Americans bought iPhones than Android phones in the past 12 weeks according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
According to the firm the iPhone accounted for 48.1 percent of all smartphone sales in the U.S. in the past 12 weeks. In the same period of time Android phone sales accounted for 46.7 percent of all smartphones sold in the U.S. That’s not a big difference, but it’s the first time Apple has led smartphone sales since around the release of the iPhone 4S according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Last year Apple held the lead in U.S. smartphone sales for three 12 week periods following the release of the iPhone 4S last year. That’s 36 weeks of leading Android in phone sales. Apple’s peak percentage fo smartphone sales is 49.3 percent in a 12 week period, and Kantar Worldpanel ComTech global consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo believes Apple could surpass that percentage with the iPhone 5.
Of the users who bought the iPhone 5 during the 12 week period, most upgraded to the phone from a previous iPhone. Previous iPhone owners made up 62 percent of sales while switchers from Android phones made up 13 percent of iPhone 5 buyers. Other users switched from a Blackberry (6 percent) and others were first time smartphone buyers (a small, unspecified number).
While the iPhone 5 outsold Android devices in the U.S., it didn’t do so well overseas. In countries like Germany and Spain Android holds the lead with more than 70 percent of purchases. Apple also holds a minority in Britain where it only accounted for 32.7 percent of smartphone sales. In those countries Android phones, specially the Galaxy S III in Germany, dominate the market.
In Italy also has to contend with Windows Phone which made up 11.7 percent of smartphone sales in the 12 week period according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
Kantar Worldpanel ComTech attributes the success of the iPhone 5 to the larger 4-inch screen and 4G LTE capabilities of the device.
