Mad Catz Going After Ouya with Project M.O.J.O.

Next week Mad Catz will unveil the newest entry in the Android console market with Project M.O.J.O., a micro-console that will take advantage of the company’s GameSmart accessories.

Unlike other Android consoles like the Ouya, Mad Catz’s Project M.O.J.O. won’t use a custom Android skin that’s specifically designed. Instead the Mad Catz console will use stock Android with a few modifications that will let users control the interface with a controller or a mouse, according to IGN.

The Mad Catz Project M.O.J.O. will ship with a Mad Catz C.N.T.L.R. Bluetooth controller for games, though gamers can use any controller they already have that supports Bluetooth or has a USB cable. Even wired Xbox 360 controllers should work with the console for those who prefer that controller.

The two USB ports on the back and Bluetooth in the console will also let users connect any mouse or keyboard (which Mad Catz also offers) to the console. The controls should make it easy to type on the console in apps that require it. Because the console runs stock Android, users aren’t limited to just games, they can also use the machine as a sort of lightweight, portable PC.

Stock Android also means that gamers can play any game in the Google Play Store on the console. That includes casual games like Angry Birds and more hardcore titles such as Grand Theft Auto III or Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Theoretically, the console should also support OnLive for more recent PC games.

There are no specs available for Project M.O.J.O. just yet. So far, all the company will say is it will ship with at least 16GB of internal storage. Mad Catz may let users choose other storage options, but it will also let them add more storage via a microSD card.

Mad Catz plans to ship Project M.O.J.O. by Q4 of this year though it’s unclear just how much the console will cost when it does arrive on shelves.
