Microsoft upset many gamers when it announced that the Xbox One will require an Internet connection at all times, but Microsoft executive Don Mattrick says the company has an offline option for gamers: the Xbox 360.
When asked about an option for offline gaming in an interview with Geoff Keighley on GameTrailers, Microsoft Xbox chief Don Mattrick said “fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity, it’s called Xbox 360.” He continued saying “if you have zero access to the internet, that is an offline device.”
Gamers who have no web access can’t play the next generation console from Microsoft, and Mattrick’s response is simply to keep using the current console. During its E3 press conference Microsoft showed off a few Xbox 360 titles including the new World of Tanks and the upcoming Dark Souls 2, but there was no mention of big first-party games from Microsoft Studios coming to the aging console.
Mattrick’s response also seems to ignore gamers who simply have unreliable Internet connections. Some gamers may have trouble connecting to the web for the Xbox One’s daily check-in with Microsoft’s servers.
The Xbox 360 may soon see a dashboard update that will take a few design cues from the Xbox One, showing that Microsoft won’t abandon the console. The big question is how many games will come out for the console over the next few years. Many third-party games will launch on current and next-generation consoles later this year, but it’s not clear when that trend will end.
Gamers who want a next-generation console that doesn’t require an Internet connection can buy a PlayStation 4. Sony won’t require a connection to validate disc-based PS4 games, though it will let third-party publishers like EA and Activision implement DRM on their games. The PlayStation 4 is also $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, making it more attractive to gamers on a budget.
