Motorola released its first ad for the upcoming Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD today and it’s a far cry from the old Droid advertisements that were more Hollywood action film than smartphone ad.
The advertisement is for the company’s latest smartphone, the Droid RAZR MAXX HD, which goes on sale sometime later this year, before the holiday season.
And while Motorola used to advertise its Droid-branded smartphones using ninjas and robots and explosions, the ad for the Droid RAZR MAXX HD is full of hipsters and buzzwords.
We are taken on a tour of what is presumably some kind of transportation terminal where a number of well-dressed twenty-somethings all have their Droid RAZR MAXX HD out.
We are told, in not-so-many words, that the Droid RAZR MAXX HD is perfect for all walks of life including those who love to read on their smartphone, those who love to check sports, those who like to play games, and so on.
And then, at the end, Motorola prominently features a quip about the device’s battery life which is going to be top of the line, just like the previous Droid RAZR MAXX’s battery was.
Motorola also manages to squeeze in a few of the Droid RAZR MAXX HD’s new features including some bold claims. Motorola says that it can pull down 32 hours of battery life, features an edge-to-edge screen, and features 4G LTE data speeds. Only one of those is not misleading.
No, you will not be able to use the Droid RAZR MAXX HD for 32 hours straight without charging it as it might imply. Instead, the Droid RAZR MAXX HD promises up to 21 hours of continuous talk time, 13 hours of video playback or eight hours of web browsing over Verizon’s 4G LTE network. 32 hours refers to the amount of talk time over 3G I believe.
Motorola also mentions the “edge-to-edge” display. Did they mistake the Droid RAZR MAXX HD for the Droid RAZR M, which hit Verizon Wireless today? I’m not sure. But the Droid RAZR MAXX HD does not have what many would call an edge-to-edge display.
This commercial is the first of what will likely be many commercials for Motorola’s new smartphones, we only hope that they improve on the first.
