Motorola, Intel to Release Multiple Medfield-Powered Mobile Devices

Intel promised us that it would be making a big splash with some consumer-ready devices in 2012 that utilizes the Atom-based Medfield architecture, and sure enough the company is making good on its promise. On stage at the chip-maker’s keynote, Intel announced a partnership with Motorola to release multiple devices starting the second half of this year that would utilize Intel’s Medfield architecture.

Medfield is Intel’s latest effort to get back into the mobile computing space. After having been a mobile chipset manufacturer of ARM-based chips years ago, Intel had subsequently exited the ARM business by selling its product to Marvell. Now, Intel is looking to get back in the smartphone, tablet, and mobile game with its Medfield architecture.

The announcement made in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show covers both tablets and smartphones running on the Android platform.

In early benchmarking and testing, the Atom-based Medfield chip from Intel held its ground against dual-core ARM offerings. That said, tests did reveal that power consumption was still a potential drawback, but Intel says that it is still optimizing its chip and the Android kernel to work better together.

The collaboration, which also covers tablets, will combine Intel’s leadership in silicon processor technology and computing innovation with Motorola’s mobile device design expertise to deliver products that have the high performance, long battery life and convenience necessary for increasingly mobile lifestyles.
