A new, unreleased Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update has been spotted ahead of its release, just days after the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat release started inside of the United States.
In late April, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update started rolling out to users in France. Days later, the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat release began in India. Since then, we’ve seen several other Android 4.4 KitKat updates reach Galaxy Note 2 owners but the majority of them remain tucked away behind the scenes in testing.
At the tail end of last week, Sprint became the first U.S. carrier to push out the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update. The roll out did not come as much of a surprise given that Sprint has been first to just about every major Android update for every major Samsung Galaxy smartphone. It was first to the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates as well.
Sprint won’t be the only U.S. carrier to push out the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update. U.S. carriers remain silent but we’ve seen new details emerge today that point to an impending release for one of the major Galaxy Note 2 variants in the U.S.
Samsung’s website often confirms updates ahead of their arrival and that’s exactly what it has done today for owners of the AT&T Galaxy Note 2. We have spotted the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 listed with Android KitKat on Samsung’s product page. While this doesn’t point to an imminent release it does point to an arrival in the future.
Of course, there is a small chance that the update could arrive in the near future. Earlier this month, the U.S. Cellular Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update appeared on its product page just days before its release to the public. And while the same thing could happen here with the AT&T Galaxy Note 2, nothing is confirmed.
This is only the second Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update that has appeared for the U.S. The T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon versions of the update have yet to make an appearance. All three updates are expected to land at some point in the future though American carriers are known for keeping their cards close to their chest.
Other carriers don’t have that problem. Rogers in Canada says that it will be pushing out the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update in the near future. Optus and Vodafone in Australia both have pegged the update for June. Same goes for French carrier SFR. None of these carriers are talking about specific release dates because specific release dates depend on internal testing.
Keep in mind, there is a chance that these updates could slip deeper into the year. Optus and Vodafone have yet to receive the update from Samsung. Carrier testing often takes a few weeks and there is always a chance that something could come up. June only servers as an Estimated Time of Arrival and not as a concrete release window.
AT&T’s Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat should look at lot like the Sprint Galaxy Note 2 KitKat update that landed last week. Here is what that update had on board:
- New Lock Screen Access
- Media Controls – full-screen album art and media controls when listening to music
- Camera Shortcut – access the Camera application right from the lock screen
- SMS App Chooser – select a default application for sending and receiving SMS text messages
- Restyled Status and Navigation Bars – status and navigation bars are translucent and can sit on top of apps, along with simplified status bar icons
- Consolidated Location Settings – location services are integrated and more detailed by new Location menu
- Expanded Emoji Icons
- Wireless Printing – supports printing over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- Prevention Information pop-up message is suppressed.
- Samsung Knox 2.0
It’s still not clear if Android 4.4 KitKat represents the last update for the Galaxy Note 2. The device is approaching its second birthday and Samsung typically keeps its devices updated for two years before kicking them to the curb.
