New Samsung Galaxy Android 4.4.2 KitKat Updates Hit U.S.

Samsung’s Android 4.4.2 KitKat update release continues in the United States today as two new devices, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and Samsung Galaxy Mega are getting their upgrade from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Google’s latest.

In January, Samsung started rolling out its version of the Android 4.4 KitKat update. The update first landed for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and weeks later, it touched down for its former Galaxy S flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4. Since then, the company has worked hard to push out Android 4.4 KitKat updates to a number of devices including the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The company’s push in the United States has been extremely aggressive with Sprint leading the charge. The carrier was first to both the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates. The carrier is back again with two brand new Galaxy Android 4.4 KitKat updates, both of which will land today for their respective users.

Sprint today announced plans to push out the Galaxy S4 mini and Galaxy Mega Android 4.4 KitKat updates. The updates are going to be rolled out Over-the-Air which means that they may not land for every single user today. Sprint’s Android updates typically roll out over the course of a week or so so users will need to remain patient.

The carrier did not get into detail but Samsung posted a change log for the Galaxy S4 mini Android 4.4.2 KitKat update that should give users an idea of what to expect from Samsung’s latest Android update.

  • New Lock Screen Access
    • Media Controls – full-screen album art and media controls when listening to music
    • Camera Shortcut  – access the Camera application right from the lock screen
  • SMS App Chooser – select a default application for sending and receiving SMS text messages
  • Restyled Status and Navigation Bars – status and navigation bars are translucent and can sit on top of apps, along with simplified status bar icons
  • Consolidated Location Settings – location services are integrated and more detailed by new Location menu
  • Expanded Emoji Icons
  • Wireless Printing – supports printing over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Prevention Information pop-up message is suppressed.

The update is similar to the Android 4.4 KitKat updates that recently rolled out for the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S3. That is to say that they are dominated by Android 4.4 KitKat features and not by changes to Samsung’s TouchWiz software.

These updates roll out amidst a massive Android 4.4 KitKat push in the United States and around the world. Samsung is currently pumping out Android 4.4 KitKat updates to the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 and it’s still working on completing the roll outs for the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3. The U.S. is beating the curve at this point but several key updates remain missing.

T-Mobile still hasn’t pushed out its Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates, AT&T has yet to offer an update to its Galaxy Note 2, and several carriers have yet to push Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates. The Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update remains missing for users in MetroPCS and C Spire Wireless.

It’s still not clear if any of these devices will be getting Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat update, Android 4.4.3 KitKat. Rumors suggest that Samsung has the software in the lab and that it will be releasing the software for the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S4 LTE-A. The Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.3 KitKat update will reportedly roll out sometime this month while the Galaxy S4 LTE-A update will supposedly land in July.

Neither update has been confirmed by Samsung and there is a good chance that Samsung will remain silent until the day the roll out begins.
