Nexus 4 8GB Now Shown with Exact Ship By Date

While past shipping dates for the Nexus 4 have been listed in broad terms, Google is now showing a specific date for the Nexus 4 8GB in the Google Play Store, a much different tactic than it has used in the past with the popular Android smartphone.

Last November, Google introduced the unlocked Nexus 4 through the Google Play Store. The device proved much more popular than anyone imagined and the device sold out within hours of it going on sale. It returned several weeks later but it again sold out completely. Instead of putting up a Sold Out sign though, Google instead starting showing progressively distant shipping times for the device.

The Nexus 4 8GB is now listed as shipping out by March 22nd, an exact date.

Both the 8GB Nexus 4 and 16GB Nexus 4 models saw their shipping times head into the months and at that point, Google pulled the plug and the device was once again listed as sold out.

Earlier this year, the device emerged on the Google Play Store and its shipping times have been listed anywhere from one to two weeks to two to three weeks. In other words, Google has been able to tackle the supply issues that have plagued the device.

Today though, we noticed something strange on the Google Play Store. Rather than list the device with a broad range of shipping times, for example one to two weeks, the Google Play Store now lists the 8GB Nexus 4 as shipping out by March 22nd, the first time that we’ve seen Google offer a specific date for potential customers.

In fact, according to a cached version of the page today, it looks like the change was made at some point in the last few hours.

The 16GB Nexus 4 still sits with a vague, 1-2 week shipping time.

The 16GB Nexus 4 still sits as shipping out in one to two weeks and hasn’t been treated to same type of specifics as the 8GB model. Whether or not this is a temporary listing or a permanent one remains to be seen. It could be that the 16GB model joins the 8GB Nexus 4 at some point, in listing a specific ship by date, but that remains to be seen.

We’ve reached out to Google about the change but those who may be in the market for a new smartphone in the weeks ahead will likely be hoping that Google keeps this sort of timing as it will make the purchasing process a much easier one to handle.

Ordered mine 1 week ago and not even ship date yet. I should have had it by now accoring to thier “delivered in 3-5 days” promise. I called them and they said my query has to go to another department and they’ll get back to me. ???
