The Nexus 4, which was released last year to great demand, will likely be replaced this year by another Nexus-branded smartphone. And while we’re likely months away from a launch, rumors about a Nexus 5 are already swirling indicating that the device may feature a 5-inch display, an excellent camera, and a massive battery amongst other big features.
Last year, in November, Google released the Nexus 4 to great demand. The device, which combines high-end hardware with the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean software and a cheap unlocked and on-contract price, was extremely hard to find for its first few months of existence and remains one of the best Android smartphone options on the market.
It’s also only a few months only but that hasn’t stopped rumors of a successor from surfacing already with Nexus 5 rumors pointing to a superphone of potentially epic proportions.
Earlier today, rumors of an LG Mastodon emerged, and rumors suggest that it could be the Nexus 5. It is said to come with a 5.2″ OLED Display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3300 mAh, 3GB of RAM and a 16MP camera capable of recording 4K Ultra HD video. Needless to say, the device that’s rumored sounds like a beast.
However, a new report from PhoneArena disputes those Nexus 5 specifications and claims that that the Nexus 5, while sporting some powerful features, won’t come in that form.
Evidently, the Nexus 5 will come with a 5-inch display with 1080p resolution, a Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor – same processor as in the Galaxy S4 – a Nexus 10.2 is said to be getting the Snapdragon 800, 2GB of RAM, 8GB and 16GB storage options and of course, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie which is supposed to be coming in May at Google I/O.
It’s also supposed to have a massive 3,140 mAh battery, much bigger than the 2,100 mAh battery that’s found in the Nexus 4. The phone is also supposedly going to have Nikon branding which means that we could see an amazing camera sensor inside. Google’s Vic Gundotra said that big time cameras were coming in the Nexus series so this type of partnership would not be too shocking to see.
The only description of the camera is “triple camera sensor thing” and “camera is selling point, testing module now is better than everything else.”
Of course, given how early it is, plans could change. But from the looks of things, both with the LG Mastodon rumor and these new rumors, the Nexus 5 is already shaping up to be a big time smartphone for 2013 and one that consumers should, even in these early stages, be looking forward to.
