Nexus 6 Release Rumor Points to Familiar Dates

Google recently said that a sixth-generation Nexus 6 smartphone would not be released in the first half of the year. Just days after the head of Android made that proclamation, we’re seeing our first Nexus 6 release date rumor and the new report claims that the Nexus 6 release date may not come before October.

The Nexus 5 is still very fresh in the mind of consumers and for good reason. The device was announced in October, released in November, and remains one of the top Android smartphones on the market. In other words, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Nexus 5 front

Google confirmed as much at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona when Android head Sundar Pichai said that a new Nexus smartphone would not emerge until the second half of the year. Given Google’s track record with Nexus smartphone releases, this news probably came as a surprise to no one.

The company’s last three Nexus smartphones debuted at the tail end of the year. The Galaxy Nexus was announced in October and was released in November. The Nexus 4 was announced in late October and released in November. The Nexus 5? Announced in October and released in the month of November.

With Google I/O is set to take place in the second half of the year, many have wondered if Google might launch a new Nexus smartphone early in 2014. While it hasn’t been ruled out, a new report claims that the device may come much later in the year, perhaps around the same time that Nexus smartphones usually get released.

Android Geeks, a site with a fairly good track record, claims that a source familiar with LG’s plans says that Google and LG will team up again to produce the next Nexus smartphone. LG manufactured both the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5.

Furthermore, the report claims that the Nexus 6 release date may not come before October, something that isn’t too surprising given Google’s history of Nexus smartphone releases.

The site again claims that the company will skip Nexus and Android update announcements at Google I/O 2014 and will announce a new Nexus 8 alongside Android 4.5 in July. Google announced both the Nexus 7 2013 and the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update in July of last year.

As for the Nexus 6 itself, it remains in the shadows. However, in the past, we’ve seen LG and Google base its hardware specifications on LG’s flagship smartphone. Last year, the Nexus 5 took after the LG G2 while the Nexus 4 mirrored the LG Optimus G.

With a LG G3 said to be arriving in the next few weeks, it could be that we’re getting our first look at what will be on board the sixth-generation Nexus.

While it’s easy to dismiss these rumors because of how early it is, keep in mind, some of the early Nexus 5 rumors panned out. As early as March of last year, LG was rumored to be making the next Nexus smartphone. We also saw early rumors point to an improved camera, something that landed on board the real Nexus 5.
