Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Release Inches Closer

Published

on

Thanks to a Bluetooth SIG certification, we now know that the Nexus 7 Android 4.4 KitKat update is inching closer to arrival, which in turn, means that the Android 4.4 KitKat updates for devices like the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 from last year are close as well and could touch down alongside Google’s upcoming Nexus 5.

For weeks now, we’ve seen Android 4.4 KitKat and the Nexus 5 leak out. And while the Nexus 5 remains unconfirmed, the Android 4.4 KitKat update has been official since the beginning of September when Google confirmed the update for arrival sometime later on this year. From the looks of things, both new products are close with the Nexus 5 rumored for November 1st and Android 4.4 KitKat likely to be released alongside it.

While initial Android 4.4 KitKat release date rumors pointed to October, it’s still not clear when it will be rolling out. Thanks to a Bluetooth SIG certification for the Nexus 7 K008 and K009 though, it looks like a roll out is closer than ever. Today, Bluetooth SIG passed certifications for the K008 and K009. While the K009 certification isn’t exposed, the K008 certification is and it shows a device running a KRT14B. KRT is thought to be a version of Android 4.4 KitKat as it has shown up before on the Nexus 5.

The name Android 4.4 KitKat isn’t used in the certification but the fact that the device has been certified with a ‘K’ build almost certainly means that the device will soon be sold with Android KitKat on board. It also means that a roll out is likely close for those that bought Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet.

Google typically rolls out Nexus updates in close proximity to each other so the Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and older Nexus 7 should also see the update emerge soon as well. It’s not clear if the Galaxy Nexus, Google’s aging Nexus smartphone, will receive the Android 4.4 KitKat update.

Android 4.4 KitKat is expected to be an incremental update to Google’s Android Jelly Bean operating system. It’s expected to offer some user interface tweaks and some additional features and functionality, but it’s not expected to completely overhaul the operating system that Google introduced with the original Nexus 7 tablet.

Google’s Nexus 5 is coming to replace the Nexus 4 as the company’s flagship and do so with top-notch hardware, software and a price tag that should start at $350 for a 16GB model.
