The Nexus 7, Google’s new Android tablet, is now front and center on the Google home page as the company attempts to lure in consumers with its high-resolution 7-inch display.
Last month, Google unveiled its brand new Nexus 7 tablet, a replacement for the company’s original Nexus 7, also made by Asus, that launched in July of last year. The device is the company’s answer for the current 7-inch opposition, the iPad mini and Kindle Fire HD, and also for the rumored opposition which includes the Kindle Fire 2 HD and the iPad mini 2, both of which are rumored for this fall.
The device has been on shelves in the United States for several days as retailers launched it ahead of its scheduled July 30th release date. However, today is the first time that we’ve seen a new advertisement for the Nexus 7 on the Google homepage.
Earlier today, the Google homepage was bare. Now, the homepage possesses a small advertisement for the Nexus 7 that brands it as the “world’s highest resolution 7″ tablet” a shot at the iPad mini and its lack of a Retina Display. Google provides a link to the Google Play Store where consumers can buy the Nexus 7 in Wi-Fi only form.
Currently Google, along with a host of retailers, are selling the 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi only Nexus 7. Google’s Nexus 7 LTE, which is set to run on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, is still without a release date in the United States but it expected to arrive in Italy in September.
The 7-inch tablet market remains a key battleground for companies and this year should prove just as fierce as the last. Google once again has struck first in an attempt to win over consumers, something that this new ad hopes to accomplish, though Apple and Amazon are both rumored to be cooking up their own 7-inch successors.
An iPad mini 2 with Retina Display is rumored for this fall while the Kindle Fire HD 2 from Amazon is expected to touch down in the fall as well. Both are expected to challenge the Nexus 7 which is currently opposed by devices from 2012.
Last year’s Nexus 7 was one of the surprise hits of the year and Google’s new device improves on the device in a number of areas including screen resolution, design and connectivity.
The company hopes that its cheap price tag, it’s $100 cheaper than the iPad mini, and high-end specifications attract consumers around the world. Though, as of now, the device is only available in the United States.
