Apple offers one more reason to buy a new iPhone at an Apple Store, and it will be in place in time for the iPhone 6 release date according to a new report.

Starting August 20th you should be able to walk into an Apple Store and buy a new iPhone for $0 down on one of the new carrier payment plans that lets users pay for the full price of a phone over 20 to 24 months, offering faster upgrades and lower up front costs. Some of these plans also include cheaper monthly plan costs, since you are paying full price for the iPhone.

Later this month you will be able to buy an iPhone 5s at an Apple Store on AT&T Next, Verizon Edge and T-Mobile Jump. There is no mention of Sprint’s comparable plan.

This is a trial that could allow Apple to be ready for this new iPhone buying option in time for the iPhone 6 release date that is rumored for about a month after this pilot program kicks off.

In 2013 Tim Cook announced a desire to increase the number of customers who buy a new iPhone at an Apple Store, which led to an iPhone trade in program and now a cheaper up front way to buy the new iPhone.

9to5Mac originally shared details on this plan in late July and Mark Gurman is back with new details including the potential start date for the new iPhone sales option and a screenshot showing the details about how this plan will work when Apple starts a pilot program on or around August 20th.

Soon you'll be able to buy a new iPhone at an Apple store for $0 down on carrier financing.

Soon you’ll be able to buy a new iPhone at an Apple store for $0 down on carrier financing.

The new carrier plans allow customers to buy a new iPhone for $0 down and make monthly payments for 20 to 24 months. The plans include options to trade-in for a new iPhone in as little as a year. For users that choose the iPhone 6 on one of these plans it would allow for an early upgrade in as little as a year, just in time for the iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 in 2015.

The leaked slide shows AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile plans that allow users to buy an iPhone 5s for $0 down and the option will also include the iPhone 6 later this year.

Users can’t walk out without paying anything. All of these plans require users pay the sales tax on the full price of the new iPhone if applicable. This means you’ll pay from $40 to $60 in sales tax for a 16GB new iPhone under one of these plans.

The monthly payment on an iPhone 5s will be $27 to $32.50 depending on the carrier, and the price can increase based on the storage size you buy. The iPhone 6 price should be the same for the 4.7-inch model, which could mean the same monthly payment options.

On AT&T and Verizon there is a $10 to $25 discount on your monthly service plan depending on the plan and other factors, which means you may pay about the same monthly price as if you paid $199 for a new iPhone. It’s worth noting that Verizon and other sellers offer a new iPhone 5s for $99 on a two-year contract. We don’t anticipate iPhone 6 deals as soon as we saw the first iPhone 5s deals arrive.

We expect the iPhone 6 release date on September 19th on all major U.S. carriers and this is one way Apple plans to get users into an Apple Store for the new iPhone release. We expect a new iPhone 6 design for 2014 with two bigger iPhone 6 screen sizes. iPhone 6 specs point to a faster Apple A8 processor, camera upgrades and possibly NFC to allow users to make mobile payments.
