It looks like now that Sony has taken over control of Sony Ericsson, Sony Mobile Communications is speedily rolling out new Android Xperia smartphone models. With new models introduced this week, it appears that Sony isn’t stopping there and the company is rumored to be bringing additional models to the market in July with a flagship Xperia Z smartphone launching in August.
According to Xperia Blog, the phones will be called the Xperia X, E, Y, and Z, with the Z being the flagship. In an earlier leaked portfolio from Sony, the Xperia Z was codenamed the Mint I and that device was said to debut with an OLED display. That earlier leaked roadmap suggested that Sony would introduce the Mint I in September, but it looks like Sony may have sped up development of the phone and its other sibling models. The expedited launch may be intended to tackle Samsung as Samsung is slated for the U.S. launch of the Galaxy S III flagship on June 21.
The device is rumored to come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chipset, which would place the device on par with flagship offerings from HTC and Samsung. The device will also have a much improved camera and Sony is focusing on the lens this time with an actual lens ported from the company’s CyberShot camera division. This would help Sony compete against Nokia with its Carl Zeiss optics on its smartphones.
All these devices are said to be Playstation Certified phones and the music player will come with Walkman branding. It looks like Sony is using technologies and brands from across all of its divisions to create mobile halo devices.
