Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat release dates have been pushed back into June, at least at one carrier.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates have been rolling out since the early goings of 2014. The Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade started pushing out in January while the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update started rolling out in mid-February. Both updates have made considerable progress since the start of their roll outs.
However, there are still a number of carriers that have yet to roll out their Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 updates. In the United States, MetroPCS and C Spire Wireless are still missing their Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 updates. Amongst major carriers, only the Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update remains missing. Americans have it easy though.
While the deployments in the United States are almost complete, there are other regions where Android 4.4 KitKat is scarce. One of those regions is Australia. Several Australian carriers have revealed their upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat plans including Optus. Optus several weeks ago confirmed Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 and even a Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 update for arrival, saying that its updates could start deploying as early as April.
Today, the carrier issued an updated timeline and it looks like Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 owners may have to wait until the summer for Android 4.4 KitKat. Optus’ updated schedule shows that all of its Galaxy Android updates have been pushed into the month of June. Specific dates aren’t given but the carrier does narrow the window a little bit.
The carrier says that it expects to deploy one of its Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates in mid-to-late June. The other, it says, should roll out in late June. Summer begins on June 21st so it could be that these updates don’t reach users until spring is over and done with. If true, it would be mean a six month gap between the start of the roll out and Optus’ roll outs.
It says that its first Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update is set to deploy in early-to-mid June while its second is expected to touch down in mid-to-late June. It does not supply customers with any specifics other than those vague release windows.
Several weeks ago, Optus said that it planned to roll out its Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update in April. Today, the carrier says that the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update is also expected to roll out in June and that it could deploy in early-to-mid June. The Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update just started rolling out at the end of last week so the timing does make sense. Carriers are typically weeks behind the international roll out due to internal testing and Samsung’s roll out often take several months to complete.
While Optus is a small carrier, it’s important information for all Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 2 owners. First off, it means that these updates will likely be deploying for several more weeks. Optus is generally near the back of the line so its time frames are a good measuring stick for those that haven’t received their Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade.
It also goes to show that initial ETAs from carriers are often wishful thinking. Optus originally planned to get these updates out in April but it’s clear that that was never going to happen. Vodafone Australia says that it plans to get its Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 2, and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 updates out in late April or early May but it still hasn’t received them in for testing making a delay probable.
These ETAs are meant to give customers some idea but everything depends on the testing process which is extremely unpredictable. So Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 2 users need to start tempering expectations.
What’s interesting is that Optus has updates scheduled through late June but it, like other carriers, hasn’t announced any specifics for the Samsung Galaxy S3. The Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update remains in limbo with some sources claiming that the update will arrive in May and others saying that the update won’t arrive at all.
Samsung USA and Samsung Poland both confirmed the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update for arrival and Sprint confirmed the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates for its customers. It remains the only U.S. carrier to confirm the software for the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Rumors suggested that the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update would land in late April or early May followed by the start of the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat roll out in May. The Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update is now pushing out so it’s possible that we could see the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 update roll out in the near future.
Either way, it’s looking like carrier Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 roll outs are weeks out, if they even arrive at all.
