Samsung Registers 3 New Galaxy Trademarks

Published

A recent filing with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) reveals that Samsung has registered three new marks associated with its Galaxy smartphone branding. It’s unclear if any–or all–of these new trademarks registered will be used to launch the flagship Galaxy S III smartphone, which is promised by Samsung to be unveiled in the first half of this year after having missed its anticipated debut at Mobile World Congress late last month.

The marks that were being registered by Samsung include the Galaxy Next, Galaxy Grand, and Galaxy Premier. While the Galaxy Next is already being used on a low-end Samsung Android smartphone internationally, the Galaxy Grand and Galaxy Premier have not been employed commercially by Samsung in the past. The names do suggest a high-end smartphone with Grand and Premier, though it’s uncertain if it will arrive as final branding for the Galaxy S III.

In the past, Samsung had launched its previous generation Galaxy smartphones under various different names under different carriers. With the Galaxy S I smartphone, Samsung launched variants called the Vibrant, Captivate, Epic 4G, and Fascinate under carriers T-Mobile USA, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless respectively. With its Galaxy S II smartphone, Samsung had begun to unify its various carrier-specific variants under the common Galaxy S II moniker, with Sprint being the stubborn one to continue to use the Epic moniker with its variant, which is officially known as the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. More than likely, Samsung may continue its brand unification strategy and continue to launch versions of its Galaxy S III under the international brand, but that’s unclear.
