Samsung Unveils New Galaxy S Phone, Isn’t the Galaxy S4

While the talk of Samsung’s CES 2013 has most likely been its new flexible display technology and its new Exynos 5 Octa processor, that may debut in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4, the company also decided to announce something else relatively exciting in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus, a new variant of its aging Galaxy S series smartphone that was first announced back in 2011.

Back in 2011, the Galaxy S2 was the talk of the Android town and it became a record-breaking device for Samsung in the days that followed. However, in the summer of 2012, the company introduced the Samsung Galaxy S3, a device that quickly overshadowed the Galaxy S2, and went on to smash all of its records selling over 30 million devices since its launch back in May.

The Galaxy S2 Plus has debuted with a dual-core processor and Jelly Bean.

So, given its age and the fact that the Galaxy S3 is already on the market, and fact that the Galaxy S4 is on the way, it was strange to see the company announce a new Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus, a device that will be coming to unknown markets at an unknown price at an unknown date.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus is a little bit of a refresh from the original Galaxy S2 in that it features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with 800 x 480 resolution, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera for video chat, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with microSD card support, HSPA+ data speeds and maybe best of all, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Samsung still hasn’t announced the Galaxy S4.

Right now, the Galaxy S2 is without Jelly Bean though we expect it to roll out in the coming weeks to Galaxy S2 devices all over the world. It could be that Samsung will wait for that to happen before rolling out the Galaxy S2 Mini so as not to frustrate current owners.

The device isn’t the elusive Samsung Galaxy S4, a device that has been rumored for a February launch, but it’s certainly going to attract some potential buyers if the price is right.
